Clarification on Evading please

Post by petedalby »

During one of my games at Warfare, a 2 base wide, 4 BG of LH had to evade.

Directly in its path were 2 BGs of Cav. These were separated by about 50mm, so there was more than an element wide gap.

I proposed that I could shift one of the LH elements (less than a base width shift) so that it was lined up on the gap, whilst the other bases fell in behind it. So no individual base shifted by more than a base width. My opponent disagreed and as time was moving on and both umpire/authors were hotly engaged in their own games I didn't press the point.

The outcome was that my LH evaded straight back with no shift or contraction and burst through both BGs of Cav, disrupting them both.

Was this correct or should I have been permitted to shift and contract? Sorry I'm not clever enough to provide a diagram but hope my explanation is clear.

Cheers,

Pete

From your description it sounds as if you should have been allowed to get through the gap. (As long as no base shifted more than one base width sideways overall).

Thanks Richard - I'm sure once the rules are published with diagrams this will be much clearer.

I haven't got the rules handy, but I thought you could shift the whole group 1 base width, but you can't drop back a base/file (like you can with a charge).

The rule states:
a) It can shift sideways up to one base width to get past friendly troops it cannot interpenetrate, enemy troops, a camp or terrain, or to avoid leaving the table.
b) Provided that they do not shift more than one base width sideways, bases that cannot get past an obstruction can be moved to the rear of those bases that have been able to complete their evade move.

So.... You slide sideways so that 2 of the bases can move through the gap, and the other 2 are moved to the rear of these first 2.
