DAG usage

Post by Brindlebane »

Okay just purchased FOG main game only(for now) and mainly just playing through the scenarios to get used to the game mechanics. It'll be a little while before i hit MP but it's what i'm looking forward to.Just a couple of questions for online play. Now i only start with the two armies that come with the main game so i'll take Carthage.I'm gonna build two armies, one for 400 points for starters but what points value should i build my second. What's the most common points system the community uses.

Lastly,a favour, could anyone give me a few pointers on building a balanced army in regard to the points needed.I'm just looking to build an army that i can start playing MP with eventually and muck about with the AI in the meantime while i learn the game mechanics. Not looking for match winner(not that i'll get one with those basic armies anyway) just one i can get used to using.Any help would be appreciated and if anyone's looking for some online cannon fodder give me a shout :D

400 or 500 points are probably the most common.

Just cover the main areas with your first few armies. So pick a solid heavy foot contingent (HF) and an open map and support them with a few cavalry, medium foot (MF) for rough ground and some missile units. Skirmishers can be used for screening but don't let them wander too far away from the main body of your army.

The Roman Army in Basic fog is actually a very good army. Balance is a loaded question and really impossible to answer. Whom are you facing ? what kind of map? Are you building the army vs known enemy? (ie tailor making the army vs a specific match) or are you posting/accepting challenges where armies are hidden?

IMHO a a balanced army is mainly used vs all unknown threats and plays to the strength of the army you want to use. It wont be ideal in every situation but will be "good enough" in most The Mid republican army strength is the legions. Try to buy tons of cavalry and fight a battle where you envision sweeping flank attacks and envelopment isn't going to be very successful as the cavalry isn't very good and not plentifull enough and will take points away from additional legions.
Experiance really is the key hear. Fight some battles with different army compositions and it will fall into place.

Depends on what sort of period you are interested in.

Other than that, I'd suggest "Rise of Rome" or "Immortal fire" first. Mostly because those have a wide range of very different armies.

"Legions Triumphant" is cool in its own right if someone likes the period, but the armies there are ratehr similar to one another and you will get many barbarian "impact protected heavy footmen" armies that differ very little from one another.

As for the ones you have now... well, some may disagree but I think most gamers will tell you that Romans are an easier army to play with than Carthaginians. A core of superior armoured legions can be a threat for most types of armies.

Carthage on the other hand is a "toolbox" army with a large number of different unit types, but to be honest most of them aren't really all that good. My experience tells me that in most Rome vs Carthage games, Rome wins unless the Roman player makes some bad mistakes or if the map is all bad terrain and carthage has more medium foot.
