any chance to recover games

Hi I recently had to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 8 and lost all my program files, with the exception of Napoleons battles which somehow survived the upgrade. I had quite a few PC games and still have the receipts in my e-mail if you need them. Prior to upgrade I had copied the program files to my external hard drive thinking this would allow me to get them back after the upgrade, apparently not as I get a can't find ".exe" message if I try to launch the games.
Is there any way I can recover the games or do I have to repurchase them?
