base shifting
Just something I was wondering about the last couple days, if your unit breaks and will burst through friends can you still shift even if it will not clear the closest unit? Trying to figure out if I can get my Austrians to miss other units down the line if they can't clear the first unit a single shift followed by a two base shift a bit further along might help keep my burst through dice disasters to a minimum

Re: base shifting
I believe Terry posted not long ago that this was explicitly permitted.

Buy every battery you can. You're conscripts are safe if the French have to wade through your max artillery.deadtorius wrote:OK good to know. In preparation for starting my new Russian army will be running 1813 Bohemia, conscripts and small line units....

Re: base shifting
I 2nd Dead's views.
If starting from scratch with any army, always go with your heart on what to types of unit to field. If your heart happens to say "I want a competitive list", I would look for a Russian force including:
1. A Guard Cavalry division - average drilled guard cav, the most cost-effective troops on table IMO. And (from memory) 1813-14 Russians can field an attached cavalry division of up to 4 of them. These guys should allow you parity/domination on the flanks and prevent your line being outflanked.
2. Minimum infantry, as cheap as you can get. Filler for the first half of the battle, advance them to engage enemy units threatened by your cavalry/disordered by your artillery in the 2nd half of the game.
3. All level 1 commanders - save the points for cav and artillery. A BC for the cavalry is worth looking at, as may be a charismatic CC if you have 10 points to spare.
4. As much artillery as remaining points and structure will allow.
A force based on the above would be a really tough opponent - although (as I found out in my last game!) if you field a bunch of cheap guard cavalry you may need thick skin to absorb the taunts of your opponent for fielding such a "cheesey" army!
Cheers
Brett

Re: base shifting
Do you get enough use out of a Corps being Charismatic? The 4 MU move and possible impact of reduced command range is limiting.BrettPT wrote:

Re: base shifting
I have used charismatic corps commander in several games wit my Austrian's. Benefit here is he can use his ability with any unit, and you can only ever get one, where as the Frogs seem to have in almost every division. Austrians tend to stay close, like any proper army should, so usually I can get him where he needs be with free moves.
Alas 1813 there is a total lack of charisma in high command, too bad Chuck had a falling out in 1809. Now its just old farts and de-evolutionary tactics for the boys in white.

Re: base shifting
You just detach the charismatic CC during the opponent's Recovery phase - as long as you remember! Even then he should be surrounded by a throng of adoring troops so a radius drop shouldn't really matter.

Re: base shifting
We Austrians are a tight knit group, unlike our blue coated counterparts are often spread about the table far from their commanders. They are just full of toothpaste smiles.
Re: base shifting
I have yet to field a charismatic commander of any level. Over-rated IMHO.

Re: base shifting
The ability to add a die to the cohesion rolls, for a measly 10 pts, is beyond valuable. Am running 3 tomorrow!!

Re: base shifting
Which is why I can beat the Frogs first time, then groan as I have to try and do it all over again after charisma rallies them, especially the cav that never dies.

Re: base shifting
I disagree. For units that are going to fight a lot say cavalry in particular, the extra dice is really very helpful. 10 points may be costed right. I wouldn't do it in most line infantry divisons, but a cavalry division yes.KeefM wrote:I have yet to field a charismatic commander of any level. Over-rated IMHO.

Re: base shifting
The mighty Landwehr cavalry that nailed your Neapolitan Guard light cavalry rallied up because of the charismatic CC. If you had charged the rest of the line you would have seen how useful they are - especially after watching a supported conscript unit pick up 3 dice to stand against cavalry.KeefM wrote:I have yet to field a charismatic commander of any level. Re: base shifting
hmmmm, maybe it's because I'm just simply not having to rally anything and so don't see the use . . .
. . . seriously though, the idea of spending points on something that is focused towards effecting repairs to your own status rather than eroding the other person's seems conceptually awry . . .
anyways Kendall, the example of the rallied landwehr cavalry was hardly the making of a huge and glorious game-winning strategy given the final result was 12-13 with no unit losses on either side in the end
. . . it just seemed from my side of the table that the chronically defensively minded Prussians had found a very comfortable hidey hole that day (and which they then steadfastly refused to come out of when I withdrew completely unscathed) . . . I had a 'crack', it didn't pay off, I withdrew - and at no time in any peril . . .
hmmm, and come to think of it, which brings me back to my original point . . . I also didn't need a charismatic general for the French that day either . . .

Re: base shifting
Well my conscript troops are actually fighting, not whimpering at the LOC. Andrew worked out that you get a maximum of three rally attempts per game for a unit. Might as well give them the best chance with an extra die.
Re: base shifting
fair point . . . and yours is a fantastic army mix for the Prussians, Kendall . . . very impressive - you should share it here on the forum . . . personally, I think it has the perfect balance of good infantry, guns and cav . . .
as for charisma, I am still more in favour of the Exceptional Corps commander for the re-rolls, CPs and +3 initiative . . . and, 3 charismatic generals is the same price as upgrading a skilled CC to exceptional without all the benefits . . . plus charisma still means the need to join generals to rallying units whereas I prefer mine to be joining units for the combat re-rolls rather than rallying . . . having no charismatic generals removes one more dilemma from the choices and keeps me focused on the job in hand . . . it works for me anyhows . . .
mind you, I also freely acknowledge that the bonus charisma rally dice is certainly a pest when pesky veterans keep on rallying themselves
. . .
anyways, I thought "conscript" was really a synonym for "hides at the LoC" . . . so, have I got that wrong
?
