Roll Call 2014 - The BHGS Big Boys Toys Event

Post by madaxeman »

Roll Call 2014 has been nominated as the Official BHGS "Big Boy's Toys" event of next year, meaning that Roll Call will be the only event where the BHGS will be looking to run 25mm competitions (for DBMM, FoGAM and FoGR) alongside the more usual 15mm events.

This idea has come about thanks to a suggestion at Britcon from Ian Speed, and is based on the fact that for a number of years we've tried to run 25mm periods alongside 15mm ones at most of our events, but have more often than not ended up falling just short of reaching critical mass at any of them, often resulting in the 25mm period being cancelled and players moving to other 15mm periods.

There are however clearly a lot of players who do own 25mm armies for these rulesets and would like to wheel them out every now and then, but with a risk of the period either being cancelled, or very small we suspect tplayers have been rather put off entering, creating something of a self fulfilling prophecy.

So, by nominating one event as "the" BHGS event where 25mm will be played (alongside all of the usual 15mm periods too) we are hoping that the many gamers out there with 25mm armies will support the continuation of 25mm wargaming, and choose to bring their "Big Toys" armies out at least once a year with no real fear as to whether their competition will be viable.

Add to that that the car park at Roll Call is probably closer to the venue than any other event we run and it became somewhat of an obvious idea to run 25mm periods at Roll Call !

So, show your support for 25mm gaming by booking Roll Call 2014 - Booking details are on the BHGS website already...

Excellent - gives me incentive to finish off my 25mm (actually 28mm...) army.

Oh, we're thinking 650 points, the only debate is really if we do 40mm move distances or normal ones ..

I would suggest for:
the normal 40mm movement distance for 25mm play...

Regular size: 650pts on a 6x4

or go super size: 800pts on 8x5

Thoughts?

I suspect much as 8'x5' would be fantastic, the need to get in as many tables and competions into the finite size of the halls, will mean that 6' x 4' is all we can ask for and expect especially if there are 25mm competitions for FoG A&M plus DBMM!

The rules as written suggest 15mm movement, so having 40mm movement is not really "normal"

8x5 would be beyond us I suspect -those tables ase just not hireable, although we may get over 4 foot deep..

The rules do mention that 40mm MUs may be preferable for 25mm figures. From my experience, using 1 inch MUs with larger scale figures just doesn't seem right because the move distances and command radii are out of sync with the base sizes. For instance, in 15mm a 2 base expansion is effectively an 80mm move, which is only just bigger than a MF move, in 25 mm it will be a 120 mm move. So things effectively move sideways a lot faster than they can move forwards. I think that the larger MU keeps the distances in proportion.

6ft wide and the 25mm comps uses full depth of table... With 40mus.... I would thought at @650pts/40mm MUs/3+ hrs would get through games:

Now next wish list:)
Pending see how it works at farnborough.... Pre set terrian... 3x games on Saturday... Even drop games to 2.5hrs... Do people think pbi/thinking and laying out terrian uses up ~30mins of play?

Summarise:
Farnborough style pbi/pre set terrian (also makes us all play on different board layouts and not our "prefered" layout - I'm just as guilty as everyone else).
40mm MUs
2.5 hr games
Thoughts

You will get a lot of Swiss armies. (If I were to play it would be Swiss as that is all I have in 25mm.)

We kinda want to make our events different to others out there, so Id prefer not to duplicate Farnboro

40mm moves sounds sensible, but normal setup rules also ..

Tim

Just for avoidance of doubt, the 25/28mm FOGR comp at Roll Call this year will be 650 pts open; i.e. any list from any book, yes ? Are there likely to be any specific lists excluded ? I don't want to spend a lot of money on new toys without being absolutely sure I'll be able to field them.

Cheers

The intention is to get the big toys out on the table at one event each year, after quite a few years of trying at every event and usually failing to achieve critical mass... so the event will be totally open, as we want as many players to be able to enter as possible.

We've also just relaxed the rules a tad for the 15mm competition, to allow "western" allies of up to 4 BGs in total for any of the lists in the theme.

I'm planning to do 25mm but it's dependent on picking up my painting speed.
