multiple assaults

Post by deadtorius »

Just wanting to confirm something. If you assault 1 enemy unit with 2 of your units, the targets defensive fire and melee dice will have to be split between the assaulting units. Do you split the dice same as you would for shooting, ie more dice to the target more to your front etc?

In our last game I had 2 Cuirassier that could have both charged a single unit of French Cuirassier being rear supported by a unit of Dragoons that were sticking out by one base past the Curiassier. I had pondered taking my chances with the rear support but decided to charge both units instead, thus removing the rear support dice. Part of my decision was based on not really sure how the dice splitting would have worked, so attacking 2 targets with for multiple one on one melee seemed the easier solution.

In case you were wondering the net result would have been 8 French dice to 11 Austrian dice had both gone into the single French Cuirassier, superior with commander  Not sure I could have survived well enough to pursue into the hapless Dragoons out back :?

Yes, same splitting rules apply in hand-to-hand - although your net dice calculations aren't correct.

If you had of charged your 2 Austrian Cuirassier into the single French Cuirassier (which had rear support), I believe the following would apply (assuming all units were small, fresh and no artillery attachments):

1. The French get 7 dice (6 for small unit +1 for rear support)
2. The Austrians get 10 dice (each unit gets -1 for enemy rear support - see p56)
3. The French have to allocate 2 dice on each Austrian unit, with allocation of the remaining 3 being up to them (although they cannot put less dice on a unit more to their centre - p58) - so would either opt for a 5:2 or a 4:3 split.

- I would have ganged up on the front enemy unit if I were you...

As it was French Cuirassier had artillery attached and one of the Austrian Cuirassier had artillery attached. The other one did not. The one with artillery went after their Frenchy counterpart so even dice at 7 each, 6 +1 for artillery.
Had both gone it it would have been French 7 dice (6 +1 for attachment) and 1 for rear support= 8 dice total.
Austrian Cuirassier 1: 7 dice (6+1 for attachment) -1 for rear support =6 dice
Austrian Cuirassier 2: 6 dice -1 for rear support = 5 dice.
8 for the French 11 for the Austrians.

French re roll 1's and 2's
Both Austrians were vets with leaders so re rolled 1's.

Having thought about it it might have been worth the risk to try to take out both units with a double charge and hopefully pursue into the rear Dragoons, then its the extra POA for heavier cavalry.
