having never used FFs before... what is the defination (size) of a "FF base sized marker" (p 181, FF section para 2 , line 1) ? is it the size of a FF that you intend to use? The commonly bought ones are 40x40... however , you could make one of minimal internal depth. The reason I ask is, if it is - lets say 40x40 , then it does offer some leeway on the orientation of the first FF to deploy ( ie 2 mm depth FF - stakes )
So, is it the intention for to marker to indicate orientation of the FF to be placed?
strategy of a scoundrel?

Re: FF markers
The FFs that I've used are 40x20. I use a blank 40x20 base as the marker and use one of my FFs to directly replace it, retaining the original orientation. The only real leeway you have is if you have an even number of FFs, as the middle one that replaces the dummy base will be one of two.

Ah! I think I can see what Simon is trying to say.
If your FF bases are 40x40 and your blank bases are 40x40 then you deploy a blank base in such a way as to allow the real base when placed to face any of the 4 directions!
Strategy of a scoundrel!
I think I would argue that as you must deploy an FF sized marker as defined by the rules I.e 40x20, then that is the size of the marker you should deploy and replace with your over sized bases later. After all it is the front of the base that is important for all measurement and who would choose to deploy a base facing away from the enemy!

Re: FF markers
does it says that a FF is 40mm x 20mm .. I still get confused with DBM
and its FFs of no internal depth.
while I'm not too fussed, I could see options for deploying FFs forward facing or at right angles (as a flank guard)
thanks
Simon
..., or if shooting.
