Concealing improved defenses?

Post by Ranger »

Hello,

I was wondering if there is a way to conceal improved defenses and fortifications?

For the most part BA has defensive fighting positions that provide cover but they don't provide any concealment of the position itself. While they do hide whether or not a unit is occupying a defensive position, the existence and location of it is plain to see for both sides once the position is within their LOS etc. Nothing says "suppress me" quit like a naked pile of sandbags or an obvious bunker.

Is there a way to conceal these positions so that they are not discovered until a unit is close enough to discover it (this could depend on the terrain, range, and attacking/enemy unit type) and/or until the defending unit reveals its defensive position by opening fire etc?

Perhaps using layers in maps similarly to the way damage is depicted for trees/woods/buildings?

Cheers,

Thomas

P.S.
For the benefit of those who may not know: Two things all defensive fighting positions should have are cover and concealment. Cover = protection against enemy fire. Concealment = camouflaging the fighting position to make it harder for the enemy to detect it, and/or what is inside of it, before they attack etc.

Everyone who has spent any time in the infantry knows the building defensive position ritual: Step 1) dig Step 2) camouflage your hole Step 3) go back to step 1 and repeat. Basically if an infantryman in a defensive position isn't fighting or standing watch, or clearing and improving fields of fire, he's improving his defensive fighting position by increasing the cover it provides (adding overhead protection, sandbags, digging deeper etc) and improving its concealment by adding more camouflage.

Thought you might like this example of concealment... The Germans were rather good at it (as were the Japanese)

I can think of one cool mod someone could do. They could make an action icon that's called "dig in" to be used by any infantry unit that hasn't moved yet that turn.
The action would terrform a "rough" terrain overlay onto the tile, thus hiding your infantry. It even works in tiles that contain other items, sort of like the engineer command right now to "burn" tall grass which results in march, instead call it "dig in" and turn it into a "rough" terrain overlay.

Adding a tank trap would do this, no?

Uh oh... I can imagine a certain cunning player drawing mazes of dug in rough terrain... ;-)

My tanks will never find you in there...

good point. rough terrain cannot be traversed by armor/mech units. that would have to be changed for this sort of overlay tile.
I can hear them screaming in their foxholes as the tanks roll over..
