Question to a Moderator

Post by Talen »

Dear Moderator,

I am most interested in buying Commander - Europe at War. It seems to me that the minor problems with it have been cleared up with the 1.04 patch. But...I hate to download patches (or anything) and don't even have a regular internet connection. I am new to Slitherine and my question is:

Will you, sometime in the future, reprint the disk for CEAW with the patches already incorporated so I will not have to download them? I don't mind waiting any length of time. Thank you for your attention.

I don't know if Iain will have any different info on this, but it would probably be down to the individual publishers whether to remaster boxed copies. Obviously we would love to ensure that every disk is as up to date as possible, but there are issues of retesting, manuals, etc.

In terms of grabbing patches, using a USB thumbdrive would probably work for smaller files, assuming you can get onto an internet connection even for a little while.

Cheers

Pip

that's a problem... Every game I have ever bought has had patches...and I can't imagine there will ever be a PC game published that will not have at least one post release patch

There are 2 ways to get Commander. One is to buy it at your local game store or online retailer if you are in a country that has a retail release. Currently this is only possible in Russia & Spain, but Italy, France. Poland & Germany will be following soon.

It is very very unusual for a retail publisher to remaster their disks with patches, except when releasing as a Gold or Platinum edition.

The 2nd option is to buy the digital download. This is what we sell direct from our website - we don't sell CD's of this game. We are in the process of remastering the digital download version to 1.04 but at the moment it is still 1.00 and you need to download the 1.04 patch to bring that up to date.

Realistically there is no way to get future updates without downloading patches. The release rate of patches will be slower now that the major issues have been resolved and its more about fine tuning and it takes time to build up enough feedback to make these kind of tweaks.

You can have CD or digital or both trough Matrix. Or CD from NWS.

Thanks to all!

I expected one reply and got a lot of good useful information. Thanks to all. I will try the jump drive gadget. Sigh! It is hard being computer retarded in this age of great games. But, I am old, damn it! My first game was AH's Gettsbury in 1959. I can only hope that this sells enough copies that it gets to a gold edition. At all events I am surprised and pleased at the level of response to my question.

Welcome Talen. Its always good having good old "veterans", as I dont consider myself a youngster either! CEAW is a lot of fun and very addictive, you can buy it without hesitation

Hello, Talen, and welcome aboard! Happy to have you with us.

You are by no means the only older gamer here. There's another guy here with the username "Ross" who is also on the far side of 60, and I'm no spring chicken myself at 48 :)

Yes, most assume that wargames, computer and board, are the province mainly of the young, but when the topic comes up it is surprising how many older people play them. Probably because we live longer; those who start playing them young seem to keep on doing so until they no longer have the strength to lift a counter or click a mouse.

The size of the 1.o4 patch is 3.08 MG? Did I get that correct? Isn't that pretty large? Or am I misunderstanding terms?

Thanks

Never Mind!

Post by Talen »

Whoops, never mind - the whole game is only 300MB so 3mb is not much. That is MB, dummy, not MG.
