Deducter explained in his post Retreat Mechanics: Entirely Predictable that units always will retreat to to the right hex:

The defender will always retreat to the hex that is "right-handed" if seen from the attacker's perspective. Examples are illustrated Figures 7-16 below.

Very good description, indeed!
If this behaviour is still in-game, are there plans to change this behaviour? It would be an improve for game-play then the retreat hex cannot be predicted.
