Classic Indians List

Post by olivier »

Hello, I'm a bit surprised that Guptas may have any chariots in their army list. I think the use of chariot ended in the third century BC.
Had you some new information about that?

Duncan Head (in AMPW) writes about Indian chariots: "4 [horses] is most likely, being commonest in art of the 2nd century BC up to the 1st or 2nd AD; a relief from Bodh Gaya, 1st century BC, shows a 4-horse chariot with driver and two archers....".

So we have chariots at least up to the 2nd century AD, and no definite information as to when they ceased to be used. It seems reasonable to allow them until the end of the list.

Whether the Guptas had any I do not know - do you have any information that they didn't?

My fault! I would say AFTER not before. Anyways, the guptas empire begin really one century after near the fourth century and after the Kushan invasion. It has no pictural evidence of chariot after the kushan ruling in the north of India.
in this site :

To my knowledge, there seems to be no chariots in the gupta army even though there many in their follower's : the Pala dynasty...

See WIKIPEDIA if reliable :
