troops training

Post by lordphil »

Hi,

I've just tried the rule for a couple of games and I think it's really great, very smooth and give me very good feelings. I just have one little wondering: the fact that the infantery training does not provide any POA advantage for combat or fire seems to be a great advantage for large average/superior conscripts units. What is the opinion of the experienced players please? Thank you in advance

While superior doesn't get a PoA advantage, it does allow you to re-roll ones (superiors for combat, veterans for shooting). Crucially at medium range, conscripts re-roll 6's for shooting.

If you are using conscripts in the front line, large average units are the best way to go IMO.

On first read of the rules, conscripts look like assault troops (they don't get any disadvantage for being conscript in hand to hand). Conscripts are also pretty bad at medium range shooting (need 5+ to hit and re-roll half the hits). You can try to mitigate this by loading them up with a skirmisher and a gun attachment, but then the units starts getting pretty expensive. This lack of effective medium range shooting also supports the idea of using conscripts as assualt troops.

However the problem is getting a conscript unit them to pass a CMT to close into contact after taking even a single hit from defensive fire (which they will almost always take when assaulting). 1 dice needing a 5+ is not good odds. A large or superior unit which ignores the first hit helps, as does an attached commander.

Large Superior conscripts are not a good choice. Superior infantry are very expensive. The most important bonus for infantry being superior IMO is ignoring that first hit from shooting while charging - and you get this anyway with large units.

So I would go with either large average conscripts, or small superior conscripts. The large average option is both cheaper and better than small superior so would seem the obvious choice.

The good combo to my mind is a large average conscript with a gun attachment. Being large helps to minimise the chances of being disordered by enemy medium range shooting. You launch a charge and ignore the first hit from enemy defensive fire (being large). If the unit charges home, great. If not you stop at 2MU (hopefully still un-disordered) and unload with 8 short range shooting dice - hoping to drive the enemy back to 3MU disordered. Conscripts re-rolling 6's is not so bad at close close (also the 2 dice for the attachment do not have to re-roll). You then get a chance to rally at the end of the turn.

A common arrangement for conscript divisions is 2 large average conscript units, with a small average conscript (or small poor conscript) providing rear support to both.

Cheers
