The Battle of Teba 1330 AD

Post by ZeaBed »

August 25, 1330: the death of Sir James Douglas, called the Black Douglas. The Battle of Teba was joined in the valley beneath the Castle of the Star in Teba, now part of the province of Málaga in Andalusia, southern Spain. The event was part of the frontier campaign of 1327-1333 between Alfonso XI of Castile and Muhammad IV, Sultan of Granada.

You're both very welcome. Catafracto, I enjoy those scenarios as well. I'm warily considering doing a third scenario (after Sagrajas and Teba), but it seems really challenging to get it down effectively. The Battle of Rio Salado, also known as the Battle of Tarifa (1340 AD), fought by that same ferocious king Alfonso XI. One plus factor: I've found two or three magnificently detailed scholarly studies and descriptions of the battle online, by actual Spanish experts not only on the site but on the entire era and region. Luckily Spanish is one of my languages so it's no problem for me. As I said, I'm considering it. Not an easy nut to crack, without it falling to pieces. Lol.

Detailed historical descriptions about this battle are hard to get and even more difficult to root out when you do get them. The effort needs a trained historiographer, almost, to reconcile the frequently disparate descriptions of the terrain and the events. While trying to maintain game balance (no easy task in itself), I've tried to fine tune some of the positioning and composition of the troops in the latest version which is now available in the original post to this thread. Changes include the conversion of practically all the moorish cavalry to light cavalry, which more careful research showed to be the case at least in this period of history. I also brought in a segment of the Castilian camp into the map, for perspective, although it was probably a bit farther in the rear. I hope all this does constitute an improvement in the scenario.

Version 1.1 available for download.

Here are some screen shots from a recent game in which the Nasrid Sultanate was victorious.

And this were the final results:

In this game, the Nasrids concentrated on the Christian right and avoided confronting the main enemy body until said right wing was annihilated. (BTW, the Douglas unit was surrounded and eliminated in the process.) Usually in this game, when the Nasrids decide to spring the concealed moorish cavalry on the Christian left too early on, it goes badly for the Nasrids.
