Used a 4 x 10 table and just under 2000 points per side with Brian and Jon deliberately playing the way Gustavus and Wallenstein did and leaving the rest to the die.
So the Swedes come on fairly rapidly with the Yellow Brigade leading the way but the Swedish second line is very tardy leaving the leading Swedish units unsupported. The Imperialists are happy to wait and just engage in some pretty useless skirmishing with Croats on both flanks. The Imperial medium guns in the centre do get their eye in early and rout some Swedish Horse who fail to rally.
The Yellow Brigade, with the Blue Brigade in immediate support, are taking some artillery fire but as they cross the ditch are met with withering musketry and regimental gunfire.
They crash into the Imperialists but do not do enough damage at impact and are quickly routed. Their support unit is doing better gradually eroding Comargos regiment and then capturing the enemy artillery when they break. This does leave them somewhat isolated in the middle of the Imperial lines.
Meanwhile on the Imperialist left the Finns are ignoring the Croats and pressing on supported by more Swedish Horse and Commanded shot, one of whom is disposing of one of the Imperialist detachments holding the hedge. The Imperialist cavalry are ready for the Swedes.
On the other flank the Swedes are making good ground against the enemy horse with both units disrupted and taking losses. The Imperialists though have reserves immediately to hand. The artillery redoubt is under threat but the approaching Swedish infantry are in poor shape and never make it into the defences.
After a brisk march along the Imperial rear Pappenheim arrives on the left just as Loyers horse line up for an attack on the Finns. Lutterheim angles in for some carbine fire but even combined with the Croats fail to score a hit but take a casualty themselves from the Swedish commanded shot. So, the Finns get stuck in unscathed and quickly rout both Loyers and Lutterheim for no loss and then follow up into the next line of enemy horse.
Gotz and Piccolomini charge into more Swedish horse, supported by commanded shot and Piccolomini comes off worse taking a casualty and disrupting. Not looking good for Wallenstein on this wing.
Back on the other side and the Imperialist horse are still hanging on by the skin of their teeth enabling the reserves to get into position.
So when one unit breaks and the Swedes pursue they find themselves in hot water.
And the other unit by still holding the other Swedes up, despite heavy losses, enables a charge into the flank by the Imperialist mounted reserve supporting the redoubt.
So, this flank has been secured but now the Swedish second line is looming up and the Imperialists need to get themselves sorted out.
Back on the left and the Finns continue to hack their way through any Imperialist horse that get in their way but do finally take a loss. Despite being fragmented at one stage Piccolomini rallies and then the Imperialists start to inflict losses, aided by a timely and successful charge into the flank of the commanded shot by the Croats.
At that point we ran out of time. The Imperialists had dealt with the first Swedish wave, with the exception of the rampaging Finnish horse and even on that wing the tide was turning in their favour. However, the approaching Swedish second line looked pretty formidable.
According to Brian and Jon, who know this battle better than me, the refight went remarkably like the real battle with Pappenheims arrival, the destruction of the original Swedish attack by the Yellow Brigade and the sluggish Swedish second line courtesy of Brian following the Swedish dithering.
We have decided to fight it again later this year but with no such restraint on the Swedish side!
