No, I'd prefer to see Simon spend his time building something else (see my comment below)

Lurkio next range

Post by ravenflight »

Hi all,

I'm discussing with Simon the possibility of building a French Huguenot army (Wars of Religion era, not 9 years war).

Anyway, he's not opposed to the idea, but was wonderin how popular it would be.

Now, in answering this poll PLEASE keep in mind you MAY influence a man's time and money, so only answer IF you have an inclination to put your money where your fingers type:

How much of an Huguenot army would not be common to their opponents? A French Wars of Religion range would be nice: good for contemporary Dutch & Germans too (Reiters & Landsknechts - you'll need those for Huguenots).

I would agree with Don. Chinese would be great. There does not appear to be a range of figures out there for Qing.

There is the Outpost Ching/Manchu range:

I think the Huguenot period would be a good choice, the Cuirassiers, Reiters, Landsnechts and Arquebusiers would cover a lot of armies of this period.

I'd buy a Late 16th Century army in the correct costume in a heartbeat, actually probably 2, one for each side. As noted above, many of the figures would be pretty universal. Apart from Grumpy's, I'm not aware of any Landsknechts in plunderhosen, and no Gendarmes/Cuirassiers in cassock at all.

Hi,

Just to widen the discussion somewhat. What are the peoples thoughts about collaboratively funded projects? It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the problem is the funding of new ranges. There is no money is making niche ranges like this – really – but that doesn’t mean that its shouldn’t be done. What I really can’t afford is a range that really doesn’t have any possibility of recouping its loss .

What would be nice if we could get collaborative input from all involved – by which I mean this ‘community’, that means source material , requirements, funding (tricky... but unavoidable) , but also discussion on poses, sculpting etc.

I’m sure we could use this forum to collect ideas and ultimately get something that everyone likes ! - we can aspire :D . It would be nice to get some community spirit too. Boutique wargaming it might but, if you want a gendarme in a cassock perhaps this is what it takes?

Otherwise I can just go back to making Romans!

I think this looks llke a good way forward. Are you thinking of something along the lines of Eureka's 300 Club?

Problem with the Eureka 300 club is that you don't get much visibility and you are trusting to luck a lot of the time whether it gets done at all.

I envision an open forums. Where there would be various topics , like troop types, visual reference , etc. To which everyone could contribute. From that a definate brief could be collated. Visibility of time frame is also good. Commitment from contributors would also be desirable (in whatever form). Really something more like kickstarter, but without all the overhead, and complicated stretch goals

Personally I'd like to work something out for the African lists, Chinese and Americas, but I know that its for such a limited market its not a goer. Typically you'd need 10-15 backers who are really interested to make it workwhile.

I'm open to suggestions!
