Lenght of the FoG games

Post by pzroque »

Hello.

I would like to know what will be the lenght of the games of FoG.

The DBM games are 4 hours lenght, because of the 400 pts base tournements.

Simply, I think it would be much more popular, that the games become 2H ou 2:30 Hours lenght. Whitch turns possible a tournment whith 3 games in one day.

And that´s what the players of others systems are used to, life Flames of War, and Warhammer. Besides the 4 hours games are very exaustive. And unfortunly, there are very people that only can spend one day of the weekend, because of their jobs, family, etc.

Its my personal opinion, that the 2 hours games and one day tournemnts are the best choice. But I would like to ear other opinons.

Best Regards.

I would say it falls somewhere in the middle - quicker than DBM, but probably not quick enough for your 3 games in an easy day.

It might be possible to fit it in with special rules
Smaller tables 3'6" - or even 3' if you use smaller deployment areas
Playing 650 or 700 points - or even less with DBM 100 / 200 type changes to lists.

Personally I prefer 2 day competitions, but the only 1 dayers I have played have been 2 games which I don't think is enough.

Ok. I was hoping that the FoG could be faster enough to allow competitions of 1 day, whith 3 games.

Seems the games will be more faster that the DBM games, whitch is good, but not faster enough to allow competitions in one day whith more than 2 games. In this case I will miss very competitions, because is hard for me to go to the 2 days competitions.

We do these routinely in the states. It is a long day however.

Currently we are playing 800 points games in FoG single beta-tournaments.

I see no reason why three 600 points games should not be played in a day.

600 points is the size we have chosen for the pre-built "starter" armies which we specify with most of the army lists - though, of course, it is not necessary to stick to these compositions.

3 x 600pts is entirely workable in a day. 2 1/2 hour games no problem at that level once familiar with the rules

Interesting. Does the reduction of points reduce to the number of elements/BG or the number of BG´s itself?

Great, problem solved. However, the problem will be what the norm will be everywhere. I will be awakward adapting to a certain format while the rest of the world follows a different system. So when we go out of our little corner to play in an international context, I don't think we'll be prepared for a different format and performance will evidently suffer.

What do you think will formats be elsewhere?

I do not want the abolition of the 800 pts/ 2 days competitions. I only want the chance, that small pts army´s one day competitions, have the same "oficial" status as the bigger games. Now I think its all to our fellows ot the "Federación Ibérica de Juegos de Simulación Histórica" (Historic wargames Iberian federation), the task to grant that this one day competitions can have a "oficial" status, for ranking calssifications, etc. If that hapen, I will for shore have much more participation, and perhaps some players of other system´s will found more easy to get a try on Anciend wargames.

Best regards.

The lists specify a range of number of bases per battle group, so either or both.

That is for tournament organisers to decide. We don't intend to attempt to impose an official norm.

In the rules we recommend 800 points for singles tournament games in 15mm, 650 points for 25mm on "standard" 1800mm x 1200mm (6'x4') tables - because of the greater width of 25mm bases. 25mm would work well at 800 points if played on a standard table-tennis table - but few tournament organisers have access to sufficient numbers of these.

At the moment we think that 1000 points may be suitable for pairs formats in 15mm, but we have not yet had an opportunity to try such a tournament. Time will tell.

We hope that once the rules are published tournaments will be held in many different formats, including both "open" tournaments in which any army can compete, and themed tournaments where the armies involved will be historical opponents or at least from the same era and region. The army list books are organised thematically to facilitate such theme tournaments.

I would "guess" that most multi-day comps will run at around 800 points. The test competition games in the UK have been set at that level at it seems to work okay for 2-day / 4 game competitions.

There is some experimentation with 1000 points for a "doubles" compition (i.e. 2 players in a team, therefore 4 players on a table). Doubles competitions have been popular in the UK in the past under DBM.

Some competitions may wish go for a 1-day/3-game theme or 6 "rapid" games over 2 days in which case 600points would work. It would really be up to the organisers to decide what style & theme they wanted.

600 points would probably see a reduction in total number of BGs and some slimming down of individual BG sizes. I would also guess you'd see fewer elite/superior units or people using the more expensive commander options.

It for the organisers to think of fun thigns to do with the rules

For my part I have always planned ot try two things if I get the time

A TRIPLES COMP

8 x 4 ft tables 3 players a side for a centre and 2 wings. 1200pts

A DUPLICATE COMP

Doubles competition where players bring 2 identical armies. On table A they use their own army. On table B the two opposing players swap armies adn then play the game. The score is done by comparing the two games, which are of course identical so even odds to both sides. 2nd game the other players ahve to swap armies etc. Gives a nice twist that each player has to aster his own army and have the flexibulity to quickly grasp another one.

Whether I will have time to do it sometime we shall see

Hi there,

If you want 3 games a day (something I advocate strongly) you really have to set the games at 2hours max. You need to leave lunch breaks, dead time for packing up armies and umpires doing draws and general admin.
