Basing Thueroporoi / thoratikai: MF vs. HF
Now that we know for sure that Thueroporoi and Thoraktikai are not losing their "may be deployed either as MF or HF" option, I am wondering how to base my models. I see 3 options:
1) Base them all as MF
2) Base them all as HF
3) Buy and paint two different sets of them, one MF and the other HF.
What are other people doing with their "may be HF or MF" troops? Between options 1 and 2, what works better in the game, or is seen as more proper?

4) Base them all as HF on 15mm deep (assuming 15mm figures) magnetic bases and make a little 5mm deep metal sabot for them to sit on when you make them MF.
Really, I think basing them as MF would be superior to basing them as HF. You can make a song and dance about them being HF and say 'don't forget these are HF' throughout the game, but getting confused as to which are MF and HF 'hoplite looking figures' can be more of a problem.
As an aside, so are Legionari Lanciarii MF or HF?

Now that's a clever idea, Raven! Hadn't thought of the sabot. It'll make the bases a little thicker, but I think that will be OK. I'm basing everything magnetically already anyway, so that works. Now.... will the extra real estate have figures on it or just be bare flock? Hmm... decisions, decisions.

I woul get a very fine piece of sheet metal and cut 20x40 (again assuming 15mm) bases. On that I would put a little 5mmx40mm step the same height as your base material, and flock that 5mm step.
Just what i'd do of course

Well, yes, making the sabot itself sounds pretty straightforward. My question was what to do with the extra real estate when the unit is in "MF mode."
I guess I'll base everyone as HF and see if I have figures left over, then maybe stick a couple extra on the sabot-top.

I'm confused now. What I'm suggesting is that you would have a little metal sabot with a 5mm strip along the back of the sabot that would be flocked similarly to your HF figures. No need for extra figures.
In HF mode they are 4 figures (I guess) on a 40 x 15mm base. When you decide to run them as MF the. You pull out the sabot and stick those same 4 figures onto the metal base and the extra 5mm is disguised because it's flocked. There wouldnt be any room in 5mm to base extra figures.
Sorry if I'm missing something.

well, I'm just basing them how I want and declaring them at start of the game. It's a false pretense anyway.
Re: Basing Thueroporoi / thoratikai: MF vs. HF
Raven, you're right. I made up some "sabots" and the extra 5mm depth of the base is not really useful for anything except adding some flock to. But it does work pretty well. Thanks for the suggestion.
Most of my 15mm figures are based as such: 2mm magnetic vinyl, with 2mm plywood on top of that. My "sabots" are basically the same as a normal base except the plywood bit is only 5mm deep, and the MF/HF figure itself is single-based on a HF plywood base.

Glad it worked for you Zephyr.
I had another idea too (not for you obviously, but for others). With most you can probably get away with the declaring at start option, but some would be a little difficult. What if you based 1/2 on shallow bases and 1/2 on deeper bases. If MF put the deeper bases out front, if Hf the shallow bases out front. Keeps a visual reminder.
Just a thought
