Here's a question
When is a unit deemed to be occupying a position in EXTENDED LINE in such a way that it does not lose one of it's cohesion dice (for being in extended line)?
For example:
1) say the unit is on a hill, but ONE of it's bases is half way off the edge of the hill to one side, on 'the flat', so to speak. Can it still claim to be on the hill for cohesion purposes?
2) What if one entire base was 'on the flat' to one side and the rest 'on the hill'?
3) Half the unit 'on the flat' to one side and the other half on the hill?
4) What if the front edges of the unit's bases (but only the front edges) were 'on the flat' and the rest 'on the hill'?
5) What if the BACK edges of the bases were 'on the flat' but the rest of the bases were on the hill (on the reverse slope)?
6) What if one base had it's back edge off the hill and on the flat but the rest were just on the hill, on a reverse slope position?
Keen to know

Re: What counts as occupying a hill or defensive position?
Based on other FOG rules if your base is sticking partly out of terrain then that part is in the open. In the other rules that means that if that base is contacted on the part sticking out then the attacker does not suffer any cohesion loss for fighting in that terrain.
Of course the main difference between the other FOG's and FOGN is that in FOGN we are not dealing with individual bases in a combat situation but dealing with a unit as a whole. Lets face it, the bases will always be over sized to what they represent as far as how much room the unit takes up, and the bases are fixed where as the actual deployment of your troops is more fluid. Therefore I would say it would have to be based on the unit or majority of the units placement. So 1/2 a base off your terrain piece should not affect a unit for being on a hill, blame the guy who made the terrain piece too small
Likewise the front of your base touching level ground should not count as not being on the hill, once again blame it on small terrain pieces.
Now if you have a full base or half a unit off a hill then I would think that would count as not being completely on the hill so you would lose a die for being in extended line.
Thats my thought on it anyway.

My recollection is this is actually specifically in the rules.
Have you looked at glossary and terrain sections?

So, if a unit in extended line was 'lower' by the rules definition on a hill from an opponent, it would still lose a cohesion level, EVEN when all it's bases were on the hill, by the definition of being on a hill...?

Re: What counts as occupying a hill or defensive position?
It's not a matter of 'being on a hill.' It's a matter of being 'in a defensive position.' For being on a hill in a defensive position, this requires (as per page 105) that the enemy be at a disadvantage when charging. So the extended line needs to be 'up hill' of the enemy.
Re: What counts as occupying a hill or defensive position?
I think the defiinitions on page 105 (defensive position) and 108 (uphill) answer these questions.
