is the BHGS active?

Post by navigator »

Just checking as the rankings havent been updated on their site in months and there isnt much new on the web site too. With V2 out will we be seeing regular rankings posted or have they run their course?

Regarding the website I'd suggest a change to its structure. The opening page is static. If the news page was incorporated there would be (should be) frequent updates, making BHGS appear far more dynamic in nature. As it is now theres nothing on the opening page to encourage any casual surfers to look further.

Perhaps Dave could post the rankings on this forum - stripped of any BHGS logo of course

I've been told I can't.

I normally publish the rankings at the end of each month (dependent upon if there have been any comps taking place) and then send to the BHGS and post the top 20 in the rankings thread in this section.

They never seem to be then posted on the BHGS website though. I think Timmy, who does the FoG(R) rankings has commented that he is finding the same.

Its a bit big to fit on a page/post here, but I know somewhere that it can go and everyone can see it.

I hate to have to say this but dave_r is right. I have been trying to get the FoG(R) rankings published. I was even reduced to asking Hammy if he could help...

Back to question asked. Is BHGS active? Apparently not. At least not to any extent thats makes a difference to my gaming - except for Britcon (which was a bit of a shambles in the preparation anyway).

I suggest you dock their salary Alan. I assume from the above that you only attend Britcon and not Challenge, Oxford doubles, Rollcall, Oxford Pairs, Scottish Open or Ceasaromagus?

BHGS is what it has always been; a bunch of people who do a lot of work for no reward so that we have enjoyment. They happen to be formed into an organisation which makes things easier. They may put a bit less time into the over-arching things such as rankings and event calendars, but that'll be because they have real lives and so don't have infinite time.

Of those you list I attend Britcon and Scottish Open. The latter has little or no involvement from BHGS. I applaud the work done by individuals in BHGS and others who contribute to our hobby. I have also offered my help to BHGS. But BHGS has been significantly less active over the last year. It may be involved in several tournaments, but it is failing in any other aim. You seem to agree the tournament calendar is not being made clear as far in advance as it once was. The website was once something I'd check at least weekly, but now I rarely have reason to look at it.

So I stand by my statement - BHGS is not active to any extent that makes a difference to my gaming. I wish this was otherwise. It may be we have to accept that less can be done now within BHGS as people are busier, or fewer people are prepared to assist. But its healthier to admit this and plan accordingly rather than just ignore it.

I just wanted to support Alan's comments 100%. If the BHGS site is to be less active than members might wish then we need to acknowledge this.
I'm sure we are all grateful to the volunteers we have and for anything they can do. However if the members want more work done its reasonable to express that wish and perhaps reasonable to expect the organisers to call for more volunteers to do the work. If enough volunteers are not forthcoming then fine we get out what we put in. If volunteers are out there then why not use them ......?

I suggest you set up a thread calling for volunteers for various tasks and see who signs up??

Just noticed that the BHGS site is now active again - 2013 calendar, BHGS challenge details, etc.

I gather there was a people change with Matt Heywood now doing the website, so hopefully normal service now resumed.
