Picking army outside required book

Post by fogman »

It has happened to me twice that someone picked an army outside the book I indicated in the challenge. Aside from the fact that they tried to tailor their army against mine regardless of historicity, there's the question of how that's even possible. Conversely one fellow post his challenges without any reference to any book and when picking up his challenges I'm limited to the original Fog 2 armies even though his army is from another book. Again how is that possible? I then realized that the FOG book has some armies with an asterisk that are neither Carthaginian or Republican Roman so how did they get there? Anybody can illuminate?

In the FoG TT army list books, each book contains a list at the end of armies from other books that can be used in themed tournaments with the armies in that book. The armies listed with an asterisk in FoG PC are the equivalent of this.

This is because the division of armies between books is a somewhat arbitrary artifact of needing to split the groups of armies so that each book would contain a reasonable number of armies. One example of a cross book army allowed with another is that the Sassanid Persians who were opponents of the Roman Empire and hence are included in Legions Triumphant. But the Sassanids also were opponents of the later Romans/Byzantines covered in Decline and Fall as well of the Arab Conquest armies. So it is legal to use the Sassanids in a battle with Decline and Fall armies as well as Legions Triumphant.
