Alternative counters for Commander to download!

Post by uxbridge »

For a duration of two days it will be possible to download new counters for Commander: Europe at War made by Stauffenberg. They conform more to standard NATO-symbology for ground units and have ship and plane symbols rather than the hitherto used ”hierogryphic” types in the game.

There are two sets of units:

A: Made by Stauffenberg with a conforming colour system, and:

B: The same set, but with some alterations to better suit my own taste of colours and to somewhat lessen the blurry effect given by my wide screen (game doesn’t support wide screens).

All credit for the counters must go to Stauffenberg, who have been working hard to give us a more boardgame-like feel of the game.

Stauffenberg mailed me the counters, and for a short time I will put them on my web site to make them available also to others. Due to a rather limitid amount of traffic available on my site, they will only be up until Friday 13th, 16:00 (Greenwich time) or until they exceed 200 downloads, whichever occurs first. From then, another solution must be found.

So you better hurry! :D

My site is in Swedish, but the critical text will be in English. Just press ”Ladda ner” from the options box – and there you go.

(Possibility to further download has now been terminated and I'm going for a holiday. If you downloaded the counters we hope you liked them!) [:)]

Would it be possible to see what they look like. I do not want to install them before having a look. Thanks.

Of course! Just download the files. Open the folders. Then choose "view" (think this is the word in the English XPs) followed by "miniatures". Then you can see all the images.

Or send me a personal message with your e-mail adress and I send you a screenie! 8)

Uxbridge, these counters are great. Stauffenberg's are very nice to begin with, and your embellishments really do make the motorized units easier to pick out on the map. Thank you for sharing these.

EDIT: my first post. I see that I am a peasant, how droll. Too bad I can't import my "Major" ranking from Paradox...

You're welcome. 8)

And as I said before; the major part of the work was done by Stauffenberg.

Is there any possibility to have them.

I have a ftp server without download limit.
So i will be happy to make them availlable.
Or maybe someone who got them can put a rapidshare link.

Thanks.

Here are my Nato symbol counters:
http://rapidshare.com/files/43644550/New_graphics.zip

Please remember to add them into the following folder (after you make a backup of this folder):
C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe at War\image\unit

Here are the Nato symbol counter made by Uxbridge:
http://rapidshare.com/files/43645435/Mi ... aphics.zip

They are a modification to my counters and the files should be placed in the same folder as mentiond above.

Remember to check the Counters box in the game Options to be able to see the changes.

Has anyone tried or does anyone know how to make new icons for the game, as opposed to counters? In other words, does anyone know how to, or can anyone, make some US-specific units like the P-40, maybe the stuart for an early tank, etc. so that the holes are filled up in the unit icon mix?

Yes, it's possible. All files are stored in PNG format that can be edited with Paintshop Pro, Photoshop or similar programs.
You find all files in the following folder: C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe at War\image\unit

This is the structure of how the symbols are made and named:
armour_france0_32.png (icon showed on the map for the low and middle zoom levels. The 0 means tech level 0)
armour_france0_64.png (icon showed on the map for the high zoom level)
armour_france_0_128.png and armour_france_0_256.png (used when you click on a unit to see the stats or when
you purchase a new unit)
armour_france0_n16.png (Nato symbol used at the low zoom level)
armour_france0_n32.png (Nato symbol used at the low middle level)
armour_france0_n64.png (Nato symbol used at the low high level)
armour_france1.*** (Used for tech level 1)
armour_france2.*** (Used for tech level 2)
Etc.

The same for the other countries and other unit symbols.

Notice that fighters have 5 different symbols (0, 1, 2, 3, 4)
Tactical bombers have 3 different symbols (0, 1, 2)
Strategical bombers have 3 different symbols (0, 1, 2)
All other units have only 1 symbol (0)

This means that only armor units have different symbols for every tech level.
For fighters it means that maybe tech level 4 and 5 use the same symbol.
For tactical and strategical bombers it means that the same symbols are
maybe used like this tech 0-1 (symbol 0), tech 2-3 (symbol 1), tech 4-5 (symbol 2)
For all other units you have the same symbol for every tech level.

Oh yeah I know how they work, I just don't know how to do anything to make the graphics work! If someone does, maybe they can help. I know the designers used digital pictures of models from an exact profile and then the artist worked on it, but I doubt I can duplicate this very easily. I don't have that much skill at it. Maybe a slightly off example would be getting some nice pictures from the net that are close to what we want and then modding them. If someone is interested in trying, I can supply the pictures. I am stuck with plain 'ole paint, and I have minimal experience with paint programs. I wish I could do more with them.

You can use photshop. I have photoshop 5 and I just load the .png, and save as .png. Looks fine.
