Impact base alignment

Post by switze01 »

Hi All

Last night in a game we had a 2 file wide 2 ranks deep rajtar cavalry unit.
It was charged by a 3 file wide 2 ranks deep russian boyar cavalry unit.

Because the boyars hit it at an angle during the impact phase the bases
slid forward so that all 3 could hit one of the rajtar bases.
I assumed that i then had to fight 2 die versus is 6 die as my other base was not in
contact - until the manoevre phase when he could slide forward.
However my opponent kindly thought that as one of his bases hit the rear of the 2
bases in one of my files i should have 2 die for that.
So we agreed on 4 die vs 6 die - which was right - 2 vs 6 or 4 vs 6 ?
I think i got off likely - though i still lost the combat :?

This is covered on page 117: "If the number of bases is unequal, both sides fight with the lower number of bases."

So, if all 3 of his hit one of yours, you both fight with 1 base. If he steps forward into another base, you both fight with 2 bases.

The player with the higher number in contact gets the potential advantage of choosing which of his bases count as fighting. probably not relevant in this case, but if 2 BGs charge, one may have a better Impact POA or another reason for the player wishing it to be the one that counts as fighting.

The rules design point of this being to stop players gaining advantage by charging in at funny angles. This is too easy to achieve to be historical, especially in an IGO UGO system in which, for the sake of ease of play, "counterchargers" are not physically moved. To gain positional advantage at impact, therefore, you have to make a legal flank charge.

With the proviso that he must leave at least one base fighting against each of the bases of the side with less bases.

So the choice effectively applies on a base by base (of the side with less bases in contact) basis, not to the overall combat.
