Spent Large units: Are they still self supporting?

Post by Trailape »

In regards to 'Spent' Large units in deep formation, (two bases wide and three bases deep).
If they are 'Steady', (not 'Disordered') are they still self supporting?
I'm assuming if they are disordered they are not self supporting, (drop one cohession level if 'Spent') thus Wavering; and 'Wavering' units can't support.
Please provide page reference.
Thanks in advance. :wink:

I believe spent units can always get rear support if in deep formation.
see page 107: "A large unit ...3 bases deep provides rear support for itself, even if Wavering..."

Rear support from another unit (as opposed to self support) is a little different in that the supporting unit cannot be wavering (see page 57).

There is sometimes confusion about being spent which I think arises from picturing spent troops to be a cohesion level lower. They are not. The rule on page 69 is:
"A Spent, but otherwise Steady, unit fires and fights as if 1 cohesion level lower. There is no additional effect on a Disordered or Wavering unit." [bold added].

So:
(a). A steady spent unit is not actually disordered, it simply loses 1 dice per 3 in shooting and hand to hand.
(b). A disordered/wavering spent unit remains disordered/wavering.

The effects of being spent can be summarised as:

1. A steady unit loses 1 dice per 3 in shooting and hand to hand
2. Non-guard or non-shock troops need a CMT to charge
3. You lose any impetuousity;
4. Infantry cannot form extended line;
5. Spent infantry are destroyed if routed again; and
6. You lose 1/2 an ACV point for a small unit, 1 ACV for a large.

I think I have them all...
