Tuetonic Knights 16th Century?

Post by veryangrytoad »

Hello

Id like to put together the above army using the German states list in Trade and Treachery. I think that the Gendarmes could easily be Breteren and that whatever cities and towns the knights controlled could still put out a militia but what about mercenaries and cannon? Do you think that the Knights could have afforded them at this stage?

Thanks for any help

Wikipedia has a reference to Teutonic hired mercenaries refusing to fight unless paid in the Polish-Teutonic War of 1519-21. The war was mostly sieges so cannon would have been required. Polish sources refer to Gdansk being destroyed, unlikely without cannon given the strength of its fortification and position. A Polish website about Copernicus refers to 'Olsztyn garrison was able to fight off the Teutonic mercenary troops led by Wilhelm Schaumburg' so it seems to be understood that there were mercenaries.
