AAR: Germany down in Dec '41

Post by Samichlaus »

This was my second CEaW campaign I played after I downloaded the game the day before yesterday. This time I played as the allies. To my surprise I took Berlin in Dec '41! How did I do it? I simply attacked germany on the very first turn with the french garrison units in the maginot-line. This gave the german AI such a hard time (while still trying to conquer poland, what they succeeded in finally but not before Jan '40 or so...) that in the end I conquered Germany within 2 years.
To my annoyance the game went on for more than one year, since Italy/Rome was hard to get.
Conclusion: I won't play the game again as an ally player unless there will be some mods/improvements done to the german AI or the game balance.
Any other experiences?

The patch will fix that. Comes out next week. Yes, we know there are some rush strategies currently.

This is probably very realistic. Except that, If the French and British had attacked in 39 before Poland fell, there probably would have been a coup in Germany with Hitler out on his tail, negotiations following rapidly. Makes for a short game though.

Another thing is that we should all remember it is a game and that is pretty much why these kind of stratgies are possible. If game works so that Poland, Holland and Belgium always fall on one turn (=20 days) then the first months of the campaign would just be a boring build up phase, so we try to make it just abit tougher for Germany early on so that every turn has some interesting options. Naturally, knowing this (and that Poland will last longer than historically) you can exploit the weaknesses. That is why we in the patch will let Germany and UK start with 2 corps and 2 garrison in force pool for quick deploy, but only in AI vs human games. In human vs human games, there are ways to halt these rush strategies but very hard to learn the AI to do the same under these extreme situations. It would basically play as good as a human player in order to succeed there.

Play with Axis advantage! Then you won't be able to do that.

I'm playing as the Allies currently, against the AI as Axis, with a moderate Axis advantage.

It's worrisome. The germans have a whole bunch of armor.
