2013 League
Hi everyone
I am thinking of starting a local league for FOG R mainly becasue we have a great group of players in the area
the basic idea so far is a Division of 6 players (we could probably get to two divisions in Oxford with the club players and Don Avis and Jim and andy Kitcher)
the aim is you play each player in your division twice once home and once away, when you are playing at home you choose the period (probably 4-6 periods to choose from) that means you can play half of your games with your favourite army if you wanted, half of the reasons for this is social so players from the milton keynes club could come over on a club sunday and play a couple of league games,
Anyway I am probably going to start something of like this in our area my only reason for putting it on the forum is if we agreed a format other areas could do the same ie Northern league, scottish league, London league etc and maybe towards the end of the year have a massive weekend where we looked at all the 1sts playing each other, all the 2nd's etc etc, This part is very ambitious so might not work but the local league format i think will
I could probably sort out the paperwork and the periods
What do people think
cheers

Re: 2013 League
Great idea, just wish there were enough people locally who played the rules to make it work here...
Re: 2013 League
We have one Sunday meeting a month at Oxford and we are aways happy to have players to come over and join us for the day. If you are interested Alasdair and I can always let you have our calendar of meetings.
However, you would end up playing Alasdair and Ben on a regular basis.

Sounds a great idea Alasdair - nothing like giving the "Oxford Boys" a good thrashing on your own turf!!!!!

I would be interested in the Oxford League (I'm in Didcot) but don't yet have an army.

We've just started a Central London 650AP competition with 19 (stone me!!) players taking part.highlandbevan wrote:I would be interested in the Oxford League (I'm in Didcot) but don't yet have an army.

It sort of an "ECW Europa League of FoGR", in that it will go on for ages, the seeding system* and mechanics for progressing through to the final** are both almost utterly incomprehensible and some of the armies involved are rubbish*** - but it will produce a "winner" sometime in 2013 (probably). That could feed in...?
tim
* Martin VT roughly ranked the players involved into 4 pots of alleged competence based on how badly he had lost to them before / if they had played at all.
** 4 Groups of 4 or 5 play round robin, the top 2 from each groups qualify for the next stage, they then get put into 2 groups of 4 for more 2 more round robin mini leagues, the 2 winners then play a final and someone wins.
*** There was a list of pre-determined army lists & dates, all from the ECW and missing out the really good ones. The seeding worked by allowing the worst/least experienced group of players to have first pick, and so on, so the top pot of players only had the 5 armies left that no-one else had chosen so far. So, I have Scots Royalist in 1639 (ie none of the good stuff is allowed, and it has 3 compulsary Poor P&S units).

Re: 2013 League
Here in the frozen north none of the clubs currently have enough Fog R players to run an internal league, but we have the Northern League which has run Fog R for the first time this year. We have had 8 participants, but not all of them at any one event.
The Northern League has 5 rounds, each of which is a separate one day event at which 2 games are played (800 points). There is an overall title for the best aggregate score from the 5 rounds (or as many as you play). Each tournament is Open, but armies are classified (Class 1, 2 or 3) according to the points values of Superior/Elite troops and GCs used (1 = 400+, 2 = 200-399, 3 = 0-199). Armies with more than 15 BGs are classified one level higher. Scoring is normal, with bonus points if you break a higher class army (+2 for 1 class higher, +5 for 2). For the overall event you must have used an army of each class at least once. The last round this year is in early November, but this varies from year to year, I guess due to venue availability.
It would be great to have themed periods, but I think that this is impractical given the number of players and it is also consistent with the other competitions that are run (Fog AM and DBMM).

Re: 2013 League
Bevan,
As Alasdair said there are a number of spare armies avilable in the Oxford Club (Alasdair has a very large collection covering several of the books, so have I and other members have a few spare armies). There is a member of the Oxford Club who lives in Didcot and another at Steventon. I also play at the Abingdon WS on Fridays as well as Oxford on Mondays and second Sunday of the month. Details of the Oxford Wargames Society are available on its website. We are running the Oxford FOG R TYW Pairs competition next weekend at Wolvercote Village Hall. Come along a meet some of the members. Obviously it is a competition so everyone will be playing in games but It should not take me long to lose my games!

Re: 2013 League
2013 League (maybe start in 2012 if we got organised quick enough who knows)
Where we are at so far
Divisions of 4 players
Therefore lots of Divisions
Oxford Premiership
Oxford Championship
Oxford Nearlys
Oxford B&Q league
etc etc
(just some ideas of names need a few more)
You play everybody home and away, when you are at home you choose the book to use.
At the beginning we'll keep the periods simple and essentially base them around the 6 books, though this might change as we develop the league.
3 months to play the 6 games. At the end of 3 months , 2 players in each division go up and 2 go down which means in all the divisions at least 2 of the 3 players you play will be different from the ones you played the three months before.
Another way to do it would be to have bigger divisions but only play each player once, anyway still listening to ideas and would hope to finalise it in the next couple of weeks and then start seeing who wants to play

Once one drops below the B&Q league the generally accepted standard for names is
Conference
Alliance
BBQ
Sunday
Pub
Scottish.
I don't think anyone would want to be in a league lower than the Scottish...

Re: 2013 League
Hi Everyone
I am at what I think now will be the format (at least at the beginning)
5 Players per division, everybody plays everybody once, at the beginning organised by rankings (then by how the finished the time before) for example
Divison 1
Alasdair Harley
Ben Jones
Paddy Bray
Andy Kitcher
Don Avis
In this Division Don would get to choose what book the armies were from in all his games, I would never get to choose, Paddy would choose what books against me and Ben but not against Andy and Don
Hopefully this will put in a bit of a handicap system as well as allowing players to use it to practise for competitions that are coming up
Ideally I would like 3 Divisions, then at the end of every 3-4 months top 2 go up bottom 2 down etc
So now just let us know who wants to play
Cheers

Re: 2013 League
How about instead of book, the player limits the number of mounted BGs for each side?alasdair2204 wrote: In this Division Don would get to choose what book the armies were from in all his games, I would never get to choose, Paddy would choose what books against me and Ben but not against Andy and Don

Is this a 600 point competition...?

Re: 2013 League
I think Alasdair is talking about 800 point armies in the League. He is the best to answer that point.

Re: 2013 League
It will be mainly 800 points
that said if anyone wants to practice a 900 point army or even a 650 as long as they agree with the other player I won't mind, i'll just need the result sent to me
Anybody else interested let me know as I am starting to put the divisions together
Cheers

Re: 2013 League
Personally I quite fancy 1000 or more points.
