Is base depth defined in the rules as a specific depth?
In our game today, a unit of cuirassiers successfully tested to charge through some artillery. However, the counter-charging French hussars meant that the cuirassiers could not clear the artillery. The artillery was on 80mm deep bases (from FoGR).
I thought a base depth = 45mm (in 25/28mm scale) and that the artillery should only be allowed to move back that distance, not the 80mm. Moving back 45mm only did not give the cuirassiers enough room, therefore negating their charge. Dead. argued that it just meant whatever size of base you were on you moved back that amount.

Re: Base Depth Defined?
p.112 of the rules states that "base width" is a constant measure regardless of the actual base size being used, but it is silent on "base depth". However, it does state that:
"No player may gain an advantage purely because his figures are based differently to the rules standard".
In this case I would suggest that the test would be that if the units were in the same position and were on standard bases could the interpenetration occur. If not, then it should not be able to occur just because the artillery, in this case, are on a deeper base.
Note: there is no rule preventing a player being disadvantaged because they are using non-standard bases.

Re: Base Depth Defined?
Artillery is going to be a problem since with the model size you can't get them onto a standard depth base, at least in 28mm. My argument was that if they were only 45mm deep then the cav would start further forward, so your solution makes the most sense. More use for those blank bases I guess. We could have pulled off the arty, replaced them with 2 empty standard bases and measured from there.
Thanks again for your answer.

But to ask again:
Is there an actual standard base depth? Is it the 45mm (for 28mm)?

Re: Base Depth Defined?
FWIW my guess would be that, as the 15mm bases can be 40mm deep, by analogy, 28mm could be 60mm.Blathergut wrote:But to ask again:

Page 87 ARTILLERY:
Artillery models are often difficult to place on a ‘standard’ depth base. We therefore allow the bases to be 60mm/40mm/30mm deep – or more – to accommodate the models. However, heavy Artillery will always be on a base at least 60mm/40mm/30mm deep to represent the space taken up by the additional caissons required to support them.
Page 89 ATTACHMENTS/ARTILLERY:
When using artillery on bases that are deeper than the standard, they should be placed with either the front edge or the rear edge of the unit aligned. The choice makes no difference in game turns, since all measurements are made as if they were aligned with front edge of the Infantry.
In 15mm I put my medium artillery on 30mm deep bases and heavy artillery on 40mm deep bases. In 28mm I put all artillery on 60mm deep bases because their size usually means that they don't fit on smaller bases.
