Detached Shot Query

I have three units of pike and shot that can be deployed as detached foot. What I want is to make two battlegroups of 6 shot and one of 6 pike. However two of the original bgs are French impact foot and one is a normal pike and shot formatiion. Can these be mixed together in a detached bg and if so what are they classed as?

I don't think you can. I don't have the rules in front of me but it says something like:
the shot leave the parent unit and the remaining bases are combined.

So you bsaically can get
8 shot and 4 Pike
4 shot and 4 shot/4 pike

The rules seem to imply you can take any number of shot from a bg and mix them with shot from another bg and then combine what's left, the only caveat being to maintain the same number of battle groups.

To be honest I think mixing impact foot pike and shot with normal pike and shot is probably a daft idea. You would probably end up with a bg that shoots as musket* and fights as normal foot.
