Unit size

Post by Scaeva »

Okay, I'm new and maybe I missed it somewhere. How many individuals are represented by each game unit? For example, is a single unit of Roman legionaries a legion, cohort, maniple, or century?

For the D.A.G. created armies units are 300 in strength, although in scenarios this is often customized to the creator's wishes.

For Roman armies I regard a FoG unit as a cohort, although they are under-strength compared to the historical Marian cohort of a hypothetical 480 men (six centuries of 80 men each). The Roman legion was made up of ten cohorts of which the first was double strength. To reflect this, in FoG I have eleven legionary units for a legion of which one is a commander.

In a 500 point Principate era army this allows for one legion and the rest of the army is made up of auxilia and other units, which is historically accurate. For a late Republic Roman army of 500 points this means I have two legions.

Note that the setting for the number of men in a BG has no affect at all on game play. Only the percentage lost/remaining for the BG does. The general design and the DAG lists are based on the assumption that all BGs represent roughly the same number of men.
