Map Size

Post by fogman »

Anybody knows how are the map sizes determined in MP DAG?
Would a game with 500 pts have map half the size of a game with 1000 pts? Is there a formula?

There were some errors on the FoG wiki's 'Map sizes' page, which I've now rectified. Both tables were showing 450 points to be the first medium size map, when it is in fact 500 points. Also, the troop densities had their values rounded to the nearest integer, which was misleading. For example, the troop densities of 400 and 500 size maps had their values rounded up and down so they were the same number, when in fact there is a 6.67% difference in size between them. I have changed the values to display two decimal places now for factual accuracy.

It does, for me, demonstrate that 500 point armies are the optimal size for playing. They offer the greatest width ratio for any army size over 350 points. More width should always be a good thing (an imaginary straight-line edge of the battlefield is unrealistic). It should also help some types of armies, like horse-archer armies, that need all the help they can get. 750 point has the best width ratio for a large-size army.

Thanks for doing that, the iron_duke. Very interesting. What would be good is if in the new version you could specify a bigger map size than the default size if you wanted to. A lot of medieval conflicts were nearly as much about pre-battle manoeuvring than the battle itself e.g. Agincourt so it would be an interesting exercise to have 250pt armies fighting on a very large map.

There's an easy way to do this already.
Just set the size of the army to whatever you want to get the map you want.
Then only use 250pt for your army.
You get a question when you save it but that can be ignored. Just save and then you can play with 250pt army on the bigger maps.

Cheers Anders, I hadn't thought of that.

It might also be interesting when we have the new system to design some historical maps to recreate real situations in the past e.g. Agincourt campaign or Tewkesbury campaign in WotR. It could add a new dimension to the game for those who are interested in the history.
