Principate Roman

Post by juanbususto »

I'd like to iniciate me in FoG with a principate roman army. Perhaps there are better armies, but I really like this one :). I'll add troops of any kind to my collection, but I'd like to start painting the troops I'll use the more, so I'm looking for an standard list...perhaps this one could be one. Any suggestion?

I assume your Legionaries listed for 40 points are actually average rather than superior. Overall you should try to include more superior legionaries since these are the real strength of this army and you should be able to make do with fewer supporting BGs to let you beef up on the superior Legionaries.

Just keep in mind (I believe) that Auxiliaries will be HF in the new incarnation. There is reason to have non-shock troops, but it may affect what you want to do with the building of the army.

I think you'll find the Light Artillery wasted.

Just my two cents worth.

Well, actually four cents worth since I gave two opinions :)

There are to be few army list changes and I am certain this and the Theurophoroi/Thorakitai change to HF was dropped

Just a thought drop the artillery and take another LH Numidian two BG's are better than one only take one unit of Roman Cavalry as they are bad good for rear support.

Like someone has said max out on the superior legions add LF to the rear rank adds dice and makes the BG larger. I think the changes have been dropped if so take the aux in units of four bases.

just a thought

Artillery are really tough to use - 6" range and very difficult to move.
Only useful in a static shooty army, not a manuever/attack army.

Agreed. Although if you can get some terrrain down. It becomes a real tool to channel an attacker. 4 dice even hitting on 5s on a two base frontage is a lot against a single BG.

Also the artillery doesn't die as quickly as you'd expect. Often you can get 2 rounds of melee before they go. So it can hold up a force.

That and you have to plan to have a TC with it on deployment andd try to double move it forward into an optimum position.

It is probably not worth the points, but it is fun on occassion.
