Army for Britcon

Post by list_lurker »

Ok, with a change of heart and getting a good rate on a hotel room on 'laterooms' I am now going to Britcon. The next question is what to use? The the Louis XIV and Ikko Ikki off to pastures new I'm left with Bucanneers. But am a bit tired of having to perennially avoid those flanks zones ... Let alone the variuos ARRR jokes

So what should I do? Something with horses?

Thanks
Simon

Hi Simon

my advice for starting unless you want to go totally of the wall is something like TYW German where you can increasee the mounted etc as you need, it also give you some foot to hide behind till you get used to them.

However for someone of your painting ability an army that was extremely extremely colourful and could probably survive (if you bought all 6 heavy guns) is the Mughul, I enjoyed it at Milton Keynes and think it could survive in an open, (though I haven't tried it yet but will soon) with your painting and modelling skills you could have elephant generals barded horse archers etc etc, weird hevy guns, camel mounted light guns

Just a thought, I am sure if I thought about it I could come up with a few more mounted armies

cheers

It causes me psychic pain thinking of using a regular army. Maybe i'd be better consoling myself for a gaming life of misery. Also figures need to be available. What Mughals are there? ( Essex excluded, I'm not that desparate)

I used mostly essex but hunted down figures so mostly used the EMED armoured horse archers from the persain range, used donnington elephants and put in moghul musketeers, in fact very little from the essex mughul range per say, did look good

However will try and come up with a another idea

Just put on the table my first two unit of Bedouin Light horse from Mirlton look great (muslim armies of the crusade range)

So if you wanted something colourful you could do Omani (Settled Arab states) with Ottoman (Janissaries) or Bedouin alllies, not sure that effective though, that said I reckin you could easily get away with using the mirlton figures for moghuls

Khurasan are also just about to bring out Qing and theres definitely an army in that list (it can be mounted or foot heavy)

another option that a painter of your quality would make look stunning is Later Polish and lithuanian which you can make anything really lots of variety in the list using Fire and Sword but to be fair I ahven't seen them close up so couldn't comment

anyway lots of options the problem with Britcon is you've got to be sure with whatever army you take you can beat a League of augsburg or TYW army with lots of Pike and shot

If you tell us what figure ranges you like I'll tell you what i think will survive though it is well known that I am extremely biased and if it hasn't got 4 legs not interested

cheers

I did see the Essex Moguls and I actually thought they were some of the best Essex I'd seen

Try as I might I can't face painting any more horses, esp Arab types... I've just painted too many in my lifetime. Perhaps I should just concede that fact and put a brace face on being a whipping boy.

As we are bringing out Incas soon, I should perhaps just do those!

3.5 hours trying to kill enough of the blighters... errmm I'm not sure that sounds a good idea. Esp for that Friday night game

Tough call - an army that can't have standard six packs or many mounted (possibly no mounted at all) and it has to be capable of competing against armies full of both! Hmmmm...

Iroquois - lots of LF for the flank sectors, lots of Muskets and a bunch of Superiors. Khurasan have just brought out some very nice figures for the later period.

Scots Jacobite - very few horses and loads of kilts.

Early Scots - barrow loads of HF, some Highlanders, a few LH (if you must) and some good artillery.

Colonial Portuguese - I can do you a very good price on a painted army ;)

Swiss - ultra tough DF not scared of anything. Though maybe they should be.

Woukou Pirates - more Ah-so than Aarrr.

Like Dave

I have an iriquois and enjoy it but am not sure it would stand in an open, the best of those that Dave suggested and with a GC due to all the firepower around I reckon would be the early Scots with lots of highlanders the question then is whether or not to have french allies, the other army I have played which is mostly foot but fights well is the Scots royalists a good mix of pike and shot and highlanders, I'm surprised Dave hasn't put it on the table yet

cheers

You could do the colonial Dutch East Indies variant - no mounted, or you could do a late Russian and paint the Minimum mounted. Both do LOADS of shooting and the Russians are tough in combat, not as pretty as the other choices...

shooting is all very well... I could do that with Pirates - whats the plan for the flanks. ;-)

I suppose what I want is convincing to do some horses , and they are not all bad :-) ...I don't mean in the game....

Then the cheesy 1696 Swedes - you don't need to paint many (and at that price you can't aford many) but they are Impact Pistol, Melee Pistol, Superior, Unarmoured. 2 BG of those plus a dragoon filler and a GC, gives you the plus 3 that you desire... and some flank protection. The Salvo foot you stuff up the middle and hey presto don't worry about the flanks...

Mapuche?

They seem to have little need to worry about enemy mounted.

Or you could look at the army of New Spain. I've enjoyed playing it. A mix of pike and shot and Spanish horse plus large numbers of auxiliaries of the various local nations. Gave me an excuse to get my Mexica on the table with some troops that will stand against horse.

I like the Machupe, but I don't know who makes them at present. Khurasan is coming out with them in the near future though.

Simon

Found the perfect army for you. Tuareg (no compulsory troops on horses so no need to paint any!). Superior Camels for the flanks, centre and anywhere else you care to name; Impact foot warriors in 10s should you so desire or 8s with Lt Spear if you need the rear support; and a couple of of BGs of Poor LF at 16 a BG should you need to bulk out the list.
