Frontal, side or rear attack

Post by enric »

I've several doubts about when fire comes from Front, Side or Rear.

In the image, the blue arrow is the target tank, and the arrow points to indicate its facing.
I assume that the squares adjacent to the fired unit are as shown in the image (are them right?), but the question is what happen to squares adjacent to those and others more far away. In the second image, where the tank is facing in diagonal, the understanding is still more difficult. On adjacent squares, the difference between side or front, or side and rear, is just a point.

And, as many tanks and AP guns have a 8 squares range, as far from the target more difficult is to understand.
On table top games as Squad Leader the LoS was calculated by a straight line from the center dot of the target hex to the center of the firing hex, is this the same here?
Maybe a table with a tank in the middle and 8 squares front side and rear from it, with the corresponding letter will help everybody to know exactly where the fire will hit the unit.
Dealing with some big tanks, where frontal attack are near as impossible, bring to get a good position is fundamental.

It uses the angle from tile center to tile center. 45 degrees from the front on each side is front, the 90 degrees continuing round in each direction is side, and the back 90 degrees is the rear. I think we err toward making the diagonals tend to the front and rear as it felt too harsh otherwise.

Hope that explains it.

Cheers

Sorry Pip, I still have not as clear as I wished. Maybe it's because I do not understand your phrases exactly.

It means that, in the new diagram the "?" squares are taken as Front o Rear always?

I think that is the case. I would need to check the specific code to be sure, but I think that is how we tried to set it up.

Cheers
