New to FOG-R help me choose an army

Post by JEFFEDBOB »

I play FOG-AM but only have pre-1300 armies, so would like to do an army that could also be used for FOG-AM. There are already Ottomans and
later Hungarins in the my club so would like to avoid them. Am thinking about later German with Landsknechts, if possible I would like a list that would have some chance against the later armies. If I could use the core foot in either army I would not mind adding later mounted and shot to the mix. Thanks Jeff

I think the one that may be best for you is the Later Imperial Austrian and German States from Clash of Empires. It spans a fairly wide period and has a number of options that make it very competetive.

I actually feel FOGR makes a better rules platform for medieval European warfare than FOGAM. Among other things, the Swiss and Landsknechts work much more like they should. Western or Central European armies would be a good choice for effectiveness and crossover from early FOGR to late FOGAM, with flexibility to use the same troops as mercs in multiple armies. Of course you can have wider period coverage and even less change in troop types if you go east or south and find forces that are basically unchanged and just need swap-ins with modern arms for FOGR firearms infantry and artillery units to cross period.

We played a War of the Roses battles. Lancaster v York. felt very good.

Had we done Ancients the longbow would ahve manuvered every which way. In this it felt more like a set piece battle. Now the bow throw a lot more dice but are down a POW and weaker at impact.

Still it felt very good. There is case that Ancients are overly manuverable but not renaissance.

I have to agree with MikeK--I've had fun (and even success) with Venetian/Italian Condotta for both FoGAM and FoGR. And I will concur with the Later Austrian/German States recommendation. One can have all sorts of fun with that list.
