First Game Played

Played an 800 pts game with the 1813 French vs. 1813 Prussians (the latter using my already re-based 1806 Prussians).

I mostly got the idea right but there were a few errors here and there - such as forgetting that firing isn't simultaneous - which is usual for learning a new set of rules. Overall I agree with MikeK (I think it was MikeK) who wrote that FoG N has simple mechanisms but with a lot of complexity added into the detail of those simple mechanisms. I like that so much in in the QRS at the back of the book, but on the other hand it does take some studying to navigate your way around.

Does it feel like a Corps Battle? Yup. It seems to me that a key aspect is getting the force mix right and coordinating it. Lots of options for mixing troops from attachments, to mixed divisions to divisions of different types in a corps. This is the period when the Corps concept was being developed. Getting that part right means getting the period feel right. If FoG N manages to capture the feel of the Revolutionary wars right through to Waterloo, they will have fulfilled my long, long wait for THE period rules.

I certainly like the attachments concept, it's is great. I don't think I got the best use of them in the game. It will take some practice getting the balance right but that's the a good think really. I don't want game winning strategies to be too obvious.

Thank you for those postiive comments, I do hope the revolutionary period lists live up to your expectations as it was one of the things that appealed to me in this project.

You comment on the Corps still evolving is dead right. I suspect an equivalent mid 19th century set of European lists would be rather dull and limited in number by comparison.

I have to say while being an author I still get things wrong but I put that down to encroaching old age ( and too much wine at the lunch beak) as that is true for rules I have been using for decades!
