Abandoned guns. What happens next?

Post by pptheos »

A unit of British Cavalry catches a French foot artillery unit in the open.
The cavalry assaults. The artillery takes a test to stand and shoot but fails.
The artillery drops 2 cohesion levels and the guns are abandoned.
There is no friendly infantry within 2MU for the gunners to take refuge.
We turn on artillery base backwards to signify that the guns are abandoned.
What happens next?

We complete the assault move of the cavalry unit bringing it with contact with the guns?
I don't see any "pass through" move against artillery (only infantry is mentioned)
Is there a combat next turn?
Do the abandoned guns obstruct the movement of the enemy cavalry next turn?

This was covered in the forums before, basically the abandoned guns become open ground and are ignored by both sides until they have be recovered by their former owner. Page 47 and 48 cover recovery attempts, which occurs during the owning players recovery phase.

The cav continues to its charge for its full move, even if it passes over the guns, and may attack any new targets within 2 MU of the charge path and it can contact.

Does this mean that I can place one model base over another?
The gun models occupy significant space on the table. In our situation the cavalry unit should sit on top of the models of the artillery battery. Do you replace the guns with a flat marker? Do you shift them by the minimum necessary? Do you stop with the cavalry just before the guns loosing some of their move distance or just past the guns gaining some extra distance?

I have some flocked but blank bases that I use to maintain the 'footprint' of units that are spent.
I use these for abandoned artillery as well since you can park other units on them.

Some people considered leaving the gun models loose and removing the base leaving the guns in place. One player had posted that he made his arty bases narrower, glued the gun to the base and the crew were on narrow bases so that when all placed they had the full base frontage, then he would remove the crews and leave the narrow gun and base on the table. Never thought about how to stand on top of them myself, so far we have not had to worry about it as charging guns usually ends badly for the charger.
