MELEE 2012- Western Sydney Comp

WHEN: Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of June (ie first two days of long weekend). Be there at 8.30 for a 9 o'clock start.

WHERE: Unlimited Hobbies Blacktown ( 2/94 Kildare Rd Blacktown ,less than 5 minutes drive from Blacktown Station).

WHAT: FOG, 800 points, open list, 6x4 tables, bring your terrain as it will not be pre-set. 2 rounds a day, each will be approximately 3 1/2 hours.

COST: $20 to be paid at the event.

Cold drinks are available at the venue and there is a large pub with bistro across the road (The Sportsmans Hotel).

If you intend to come please let Paul Rattray (0400387254) or myself (0413 731328)know, either by Email or phone. Lists should be submitted for checking at least 1 week prior to the comp to either "Martymagnificent@yahoo.com.au" or "p_rattray@hotmail.com"

We intend to experiment with an alternative scoring system this year. This is in response to discussion on the OzFOG group and in order to encourage decisive play. Details are below.

Thank you in advance to Unlimited Hobbies for agreeing to provide the venue and prizes.

Martin Williams

FOG Alternative Scoring System

Scores will be calculated as follows:

1) Any of your opponents BG's or generals that are destroyed or broken(including routed off table). Note a general can not be broken only destroyed = full points value

2) Any of your opponents BG's or generals that are at 50% of original strength, Fragmented or off table for any reason other than a rout. Note generals can not be fragmented only off table = 1/2 points value

3) Camp sacked =80 points

Use these values to reach a final score as follows:

If you broke opponents army you score the maximum possible 5 points (unless both armies break in which case you score 3 each) and no other calculations are required, otherwise:

1-100 =1 point

101-200 =2 points

201+ =3 points

Scored at least 50 points more than opponent +1

So if you broke your opponents army but lost 120 points doing it you would score 5-2. If you scored 250 points and your opponent 180 it would be a 4-2. Without breaking the enemy the most you could score would be 4 points.

I hope this system, with its emphasis on actually killing the enemy and 0-0 result for bloodless draws, should encourage more decisive play and the result will often be evident without having to think too much about detailed calculations.

I believe a good weekend was had by all.

Many thanks to Unlimited Hobbies for hosting the event and to all who attended (especially those who travelled, in some cases from interstate).

Although I may be biased, I felt the alternative scoring system was, in general, a success. It is intended to encourage a "better to go down swinging than eke out a bloodless draw" approach to play. If anyone who played or has just read the system has any thoughts please post about them here or on the OZ FOG yahoogroup. It was suggested we could have recorded the results under the "standard" system as well to see how big a difference the change actually made and, in retrospect, this may have been a good idea.

The final results
