cavalry pursuit question

Post by deadtorius »

In our first game I ended up with my Cuirassier swinging around a village hoping to get into the French rear. As luck would have it due to double batteries of canister I forced a French unit to wavering and its outcome move dropped it dead in front of the cuirassier, who were now on its flank and in assault range. Better yet this was from defensive fire in the French turn assault phase so the cuirassier were good to go for the kill.

In the Austrian assault phase the cuirassier hit the Froggies in the flank, they were wavering so broke and broken troops in contact with cavalry are destroyed. Is there any kind of pursuit or pass through for the cav or are the infantry just removed and the cav stay put? I assume they would be hacking up the unit they just contacted and destroyed so might be busy for the rest of the turn.
Or
Do the Froggies retire first and are pursued and then removed in the recovery phase?

We just removed the wavering unit and left the cuirassier where they were.

Hi,

You are right - because they were Wavering and hit in the flank they automatically become Broken.
Then they need to do an outcome move of D6+4. This is "Otherwise" on the OUTCOME MOVES table because the Cavalry have not yet contacted the Infantry. This comes from the ACTION SEQUENCE:
1. Declare Assaults (CMT for assaulting units if required).
2. Declare responses (CMT or CT for target units if required) - this is where the test was automatically failed and the target Infantry became Broken. The results are applied immediately, so the Broken unit makes an outcome move. Any friends nearby must test for having a Broken Infantry unit pass within 4MU of them. They move directly away from the Cavalry.
3. Move assaulting units and adjudicate defensive firing. If the Cavalry can reach the Infantry, then they are moved into contact and the Infantry is automatically destroyed (p.65/66 in Pursuit). If the Infantry has passed through friends, then the Cavalry may end up contacting these friends.
If the Cavalry cannot reach the Infantry, then the Infantry has successfully evaded (even though this is an involuntary evade move) and see rules on p.31 for what the Cavalry can do.

Cheers,
John Shaw

Well that would have certainly made things more interesting, guess we flubbed the when they break thing, too much FOG A/M and FOG R on the brain where the target breaks on contact. Thanks for pointing that one out.
