Attachments, skirmish formation, and reformed units
So after reading the rules a couple questions came up.
1. Attachments: Do attachments replace a base, or do they hang off one side? I ask since it says when you lose them they are replaced with a regular base of the unit type, which I think would look a little odd if they are a hanging base like that.
2. Skirmish Formation: I know in light units the front two bases should depict models in skirmish layout, but what about when a unit enters full skirmish? Do I need to keep extra skirmish depicted bases handy for my army, or is there some other way of depicting fully skirmished units?
3. Unreformed/Reformed units: Aside from the variations in movement and firing, is there any difference in the way reformed and unreformed units should be depicted on the base? Historically the two patterns look very different, but given the limitations of models on bases not being confusing I'm not sure how to depict it.
Thanks,
Dan

From what I get
1. They replace a base
2. They change into foot on skirmish bases ie 4 x bases with a number of figures in skirkish order, I'm sure you can use something apart from bases.
3. No difference in bases from what i gather.
Sure someone will give you a better answer.

Re: Attachments, skirmish formation, and reformed units
i think your answers are correct
Re: Attachments, skirmish formation, and reformed units
1. They do replace a base. When a unit loses its attachment and if it ralllies after being broken it is also spent so loses that replacement stand anyway except a skirmisher attachment - see page 71.danno81 wrote:So after reading the rules a couple questions came up.

2. When a unit goes into open order than you replace the close order bases with open order bases . If you are short of such bases the I suppose you might replace all but one of the close order ones and not all of them - the main thing is to be able to see clearly that the unit is not in extended line but open order.
3. No difference in appearance is required by the rules.

Re: Attachments, skirmish formation, and reformed units
this seems like a good place to ask about attachments, I noticed that in some of the lists in the book you can attach a mounted unit. Using the Prussian army as an example, it list you can have 1 or 2 cav attached to each infantry division, so that means 1 or 2 cav bases under command of that division commander, and how many dice would they get when they fight?

I think (you've probably read more than me so far!!):deadtorius wrote:this seems like a good place to ask about attachments, I noticed that in some of the lists in the book you can attach a mounted unit. -they don't operate together...you "trade" one of the 4 or 6 bases of an infantry unit for one of the cavalry bases and it is placed at the back
-the unit will still fight as infantry
-I think the only benefit (I don't see any dice additions for combat) is you have cav. close to enemy which reduces their dice shooting at you
Am I right in this???
Re: Attachments, skirmish formation, and reformed units
Thanks, that clears up a lot.1. They do replace a base. When a unit loses its attachment and if it ralllies after being broken it is also spent so loses that replacement stand anyway except a skirmisher attachment - see page 71.
2. When a unit goes into open order than you replace the close order bases with open order bases . 3. No difference in appearance is required by the rules.

Yes - they reduce the number of dice shooting at you at medium range only. The are presumed to be operating in support of the unit and suppreesing the enemy skirmishers.-I think the only benefit (I don't see any dice additions for combat) is you have cav. close to enemy which reduces their dice shooting at you

Re: Attachments, skirmish formation, and reformed units
I know that a unit of rifles only loses 1 dice if enemy cavalry are close. But what happens if (e.g., Austrians 1813 list) you have a unit of shooting-as-reformed infantry with an attachment of skirmish rifles? Does this let the entire unit only lose 1 dice from shooting?
What is the benefit of having the skirmish rifle attachment?

I like the way rifles are depicted in this game. Not some uber civil war sniper rifle sent back in time. Units with rifle are either good or not.terrys wrote:Not to mention page 67: Casualties to Commanders (from firing):What is the benefit of having the skirmish rifle attachment?

Re: Attachments, skirmish formation, and reformed units
seems something else we completely forgot today... kept forgetting to roll for commanders after a combat. I really need to get my general on larger bases, they just seem to blend in with the units right now.
