Hill Los

Post by hazelbark »

p96

So I troops within 2 MU of a crest of a hill can see maximum distance. But can only be seen by enemy within 6 MU.

So if the troops behind the crest fire at someone does that make the eligible to be shot back at by enemy artillery beyond 6 MU? I think the answerr is no. As it is not explicitly permitted.

And on p 97 under cover it specifically says troops can't be beyonw 6 MU unless firing out of the cover.

The real point is it says infantry behind crest may fire at medium and Close range. But it says artillery may only fire at close range. So I gather that artillery even though it can see cannot fire.

Hi,

You might like to think of it this way:
- Infantry can fire at medium range because this is skirmish fire. The skirmishers are closer to the enemy unit and may even be on or past the crest firing at the enemy unit.
- Artillery and Infantry that is back nearly 6MU may see the plumes on shakos, see flags/standards/eagles and even the top half of officers mounted on horses. So you know the enemy is there in large numbers, but you do not have a full target to fire at. Your own officers on horses will see a bit more which allows them to plan an assault. But infantry and cannon fire would tend to sail over the top of the enemy. Inexperienced and even seasoned troops tended to fire high (because of the recoil of the muskets), so over-the-crest fire will not do enough damage to count.

Cheers,

I could see it justified that way.
