guns in the way of a charge

Post by deadtorius »

Had a situation in our game today that we were not too sure how to handle.
I had a pike and shot unit (yes I am trying a different list so no Tercios in this army) that was protecting my artillery.
The dastardly Protestants had been moving up on my guns steadily, and my shooting had resulted in misses or passed death rolls.
To the left and just in front of my guns was another friendly P&S unit that I was moving forwards trying to make room for the supports.
The supporting P&S unit was strung out just past the left of my 2 gun battery so had my far left shot stands behind the friends to their front and to the left of the gun. The enemy was in front of the guns and strung off to the right of the guns. They kept moving forwards on me.

I finally had room to get my supports out from behind my guns ( friendly troops had moved forward enough) but it turned out that the sneaky enemy had moved up enough that I could not fit 2 bases deep between them and the front of my artillery.

Due to lack of room to actually fit it was decided I had no choice but to stand behind the guns and hope they would charge me, which they did not by end of game, instead they just kept shooting my supports.

Is this a no charge situation or could I have charged and pushed something back to make room for the supporting troops?

Of course you can't charge from behind your own artillery.

p 67

last sentence of first paragraph.
