Derby World Teams Competition 6/7 October 2012

Post by kevinj »

I have been in touch with the organisers of this and it is not too late to get Fog R included, provided there is sufficient interest and an umpire is available.

The "standard" Derby format would be teams of three players, split into separate pools (with a different theme for each). The draw is organised on a Swiss basis by team rather than your individual score.

I would be happy to take on the organisational side and could also umpire unless anyone more qualified cares to volunteer. The umpire is not precluded from playing.

If you would be interested, please let me know so that we can move towards getting Fog R included and start to nail down the organisation (I.e. argue about potential themes ). Let me know if you would be able to supply a team or if you're interested as an individual, as I'm sure we could organise those who don't belong to a club into teams.

Cheers,

Kevin

Hi, I have a team from SELWG (We actually enquired with Derby last year as we thought they were running this)
Could probably get another team together as well, will update this after Burton.

Hi Kevin,

I'm pretty sure we can get 1 Burton team to enter , as FoG:R is game 'de jour' at the moment. However, if it is 'themed' (which I hope it is), then its best to announce earlier rather than later, so that folks can get their armies together

thanks

When it was rumoured to be running last year, the rumour ran that each team would have to have one "early", one "middle " and one "late" period army. Obviously, not sure of where the dividing lines would be drawn, but hopefully, most groups of three players could hit this target.

Thank you Simon. At the moment I'm really canvassing opinion to provide some assurance that the event is viable. From the people I have spoken to at Badcon and via responses to my Forum posts I believe that we could get 6/8 teams, and I would expect that to grow once the event was formally announced. Until that time I feel that it would be premature to finalise anything. However, from the discussions I've had, it's clear that not everybody is familiar with the format, so here is a synopsis of what happens in Fog AM:

There are 3 themed pools. Each team provides one player for each pool. The draw is by team, so you play the person in your pool from the team that yours is drawn against. The score for the 3 players is combined and the next round's draw is conducted using the normal Swiss system.

My inclination would be to make the 3 pools as wide as possible and my current thoughts are:

1) Europe, Middle East and N Africa, up to either 1570 (thereby excluding Cuirassiers) or 1590 (excluding Muskets)
2) Europe after 1570/90 (possibly including the Ottomans)
3) Everything else, probably ending at 1690, possibly further restricting European colonial armies to give the more colourful options a chance.

This would allow nearly all of the armies to be used in at least one period, but needs to be checked to ensure there are no glaring anomalies. However, first we have to get the competition agreed, so that's where I'm focussing my effort at the moment.

I'm sure Central London would be up for this

Given it will be at the end of the year and we'll all have played a lot by then I'd almost be tempted to throw in one purely non-european pool (no colonials)

Count me in!

I'd far prefer to play FoGR over AM.

Kevin, I have canvassed opinion at SELWG and it looks , at the moment , as though we have two teams ready for it, and a possibility of a third. Hope you can sort it out with Derby to get this played. Tony

I have now received confirmation from the organisers that they are happy to include Fog R at Derby this year. :D

My next step is to finalise the periods. Here are my thoughts:

1) The Early European Renaissance - up to 1570, no battle troops with musket or impact pistol. Armies from T&T and CofE.

2) The rise of Pistols and Muskets. European Warfare from 1570-1700. Armies from WofR and D&G, plus any from T&T or CofE that aren't allowed in Period 1.

3) Non European War in the 16th and 17th Centuries. Armies from C&C and CofG. My instinct here is to restrict Colonial armies to allied contingents only.

I'm happy for any feedback on these periods, but my aim is to allow as wide a range as possible over the 3 periods, as opposed to the Campaign philosophy of 3 very tight periods.

The details are now online at http://www.worldwargames.co.uk/

Thanks to everyone for the feedback provided.

It would be helpful if anyone who enters a team drops me an email so I can have an idea how many lists to expect.

If you want to enter, but don't have a team, please get in touch so I can put you in contact with anyone else who's looking.

Cheers,

Looks great.

As well as 3 interesting themed periods, I think its a bold and innovative step not to specify a points limit for the armies in the competition rules - presumably allowing 'legal lists' of any size will lead to some real slugfests, with a good chance of "he who has the most toys, wins"

:-)

It will be the normal 800 points per period. I will get the information updated when I can.

Thanks for spotting it.

There is a 9900 point FoGR comp scheduled for the US later this year - they do like to do things bigger in the US. As this is the World Teams, maybe the combined points total will exceed that...

Now that Britcon is finished, this is a gentle reminder that the scheduled closing date for entries is 7th September, so please get your entries in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Also please send me a PM/email so that I can keep track of current entries.

Anybody who is keen to play but doesn't have a team should also get in touch with me so that I can merge individuals into teams.

Thanks,

Kevin
