How many lancers?

Post by babyshark »

I have been using a variety of lancer cav armies recently with the basic format of 5 BGs lancers plus whatever supporting troops the list allows. I am pondering a change to reduce the number of lancers and increase the number of other BGs.

So: in general, assuming that the other troops are useful (Dailami. Almughavars, etc.), are three BGs of lancers enough to be effective, or is three just enough to get into trouble?

Talk to me,

Marc

IMO if Knights just enough. If cav too few. But I've gone off lancers recently.

What are subbing for the lancers? Light spears? Shooty cav? Or are you sliding away from cav entirely?

Hordes, of, well, anything really. Tried Tons of Cats, a plethora of Cav lancers, a myriad of Knights, masses of BW Sw Cav, swarms of LH. The LH was the worst, so I tried them again. Try something else next. Then I'll probably end up back at the beginning in time for Britcon.

I've never used Romans in competition. I think that has swarms. But I don't think I'll ever become that depraved.

Greaco Bactrian is a good army at 800, not tho at 900. Palmyran with ally at 7 BG of cats was good @ 800.

Has anybody played me after I wrote an army list whilst drunk, then played drunk.

Thankfully I am sober when I write my lists.

So the answer would be never

I believe the standard answer is "it depends what you want to do with them".
Also what exactly the function of troops (not necessarily the actual troop type) in the rest of your army is matters (i.e. you can substitute other troop types to do the lancers job).

If you build your army to deliver an attack of just lancers I would go with 5 BG, 3 BG if your are using a lancer something else combo.
3 or 4 BG should do for a mounted wing of a combined arms type idea.

I ran some Turks with 2 or 3 bg of undrilled lancers. The rest of the army was cav bow sword and 4 lh plus hand gunner filler. It was ok but not a world beater.

I did quite well with the Ghurids. The thing is that you have to have a reason to have Undrilled Protected Defensive Spearmen.
