Hi there,
I am new to the game - just bought it about 10 days ago. From the other hand, I know Panzer General system pretty well, so after playing few scenarios I have already some coments.
1. I'm not sure if I like how the combat of the mounted infantry is modelled. Basically, I have noticed that the mounted infantry is pretty helpless against counter attacks during the enemy's turn ( even if the unit transport is some APC, like the Sd.Kfz. 251). I agree, that there should be some small defence penalty for the mounted infantry when attacked, but the unit should be able to defend itself. The best solution would be, if the infantry automatically dismounted after being attacked. Right now, the best tactics is to keep the motorized infantry units well behind the first line, because a rapid and aggressive advance is too dangerous. I mean, it's fine when a infantry unit in the open get's wiped out by an armoured counter attack. But I have an impression, that if a unit is mounted in the trucks ( not APC's ), then it's defensive value is zero. It's basically like attacking empty carriers/trucks.
2. Shouldn't the 88mm flaks set to the anti tank/ground mode, have their firing range of 2 hexes? They would be much more useful and dangerous, just like in the reality.
3. Is it possible to self back units in order to get some additional cash? I find some core units not very useful, so I would prefer to disband them and exchange for some additional prestige, in order to purchase more appropiate units. Maybe the option is already there, but I haven't noticed?
4. I like the way how the tanks are modeled in the game. They are far from being super weapons and have some serious limitations due to the terrain. But maybe it would be nice to enchance a little their offensive potential by allowing them to attack twice during friendly a turn or overrun weak units? In exchange they could be more expensive.

You can disband units during deployment be pressing d when unit is selected. You will receive prestige for that unit. Your other points are interesting. 88's with a AT range of 2 would make them much more effective. Too much? I don't know. But I think there is a easy way to change their range. I sure wouldn't mind if my 88's had a range of 2
Thanks for the calrification in regards of disbanding the unitsdan_hnnng wrote:You can disband units during deployment be pressing d when unit is selected. You will receive prestige for that unit. If it comes to 88mm flaks, right now I don't see them to useful in the AT role. They have to be mounted in order to be transported, so you cannot place them on the first line directly after the movement. The longer range would compensate for that. Historically their range and punching power was much greater than the one of the early war tanks, but the game does not represent it. I am thinking here of for example of the early Barbarossa scenarios, when the 88's were the only effective weapon against heavier soviet tanks. If they had firing range of 2 hexes, you could place then behind your first line and then fire "over" friendly units against the counter attacking armour.

ivanov,
Through the Equipment/FX/graphics Editor by Mr. Garnett at this thread leading to the download link: viewtopic.php?t=26898&highlight=equipment+editor
You can do most anything with your units to "tweak" them. There are enough mods for units to be added, graphics, camouflage, efx, etc. you will find on this forum to make so many tweaks, modifications and adjustments that it is almost like having your own custom game to build it the way you want.
If you just got the game, by all means search out these mods and things that will help you make the game more interesting and challenging to your taste. You will find all the help you need on this forum I think.

Old Timer Panzer General fan. Maybe a Volksturm soldier now. Did they let Volksturm drive Panzers?

Big thanks to our helpful community members for their constructive posts, and I thought I'd add a few pointers too.
In regards to #2, I direct you towards this thread.

I'm not sure if you're playing the stock campaign or the DLCs, but most of our players seem to be really enjoying the role of the dual purpose 88 in the DLC campaigns.

In the stock campaign the player is generally always on the offensive, and somewhat strict time limits make it difficult for towed ATG units to get put to much use. In the DLC campaigns, the time limit is somewhat relaxed and there are a LOT of enemy AI counterattacks with tanks, even as early as DLC 1939 and DLC 1940. This environment really lends itself to allowing the 88 to see a lot of use. Especially in the Stonne and Arras Allied counterattack scenarios where the 88 is pretty much the best and only ground unit that can stand toe against the Allied Char Bs and Matilda IIs.HeinzG wrote:The best Pak is the Flak!![]()
With the new patch 1.04 and the DLC scenarios obviously the 8.8 FlaK fit's the role it played in German warfare.
Not enormously expensive, yet deadly to enemy tanks the 8.8 is superb
Thanks for you comments. I will try to get familiar with the editor. However my suggestions were in regards to the changes for the official version, possible to implement maybe with a next patch? I much prefer a multiplayer, so it would be nice if the proposed fixes were something universal...
I suppose you need to have the same version of the game if you play a multiplayer match?
I purchased an additional 1941 campaign and played the Metaxas Line scenario, where there were plenty of british armour conter attacks. The whiped out two of my mounted motorized infantry units, that were on the first line of my advance. After that sad experience
I simply keept my flak unit far from the first line and never got a chanve to use it in the AT role.

Ok, I have read the thread by SAVOIE73 about the long range cannons. I get the point about the initiative, influence of the close terrain and the scale of the game. I have also found the best way to employ my 88's. Since they can move one hex and attack with a small penalty, even when they are dismounted, that's fine for me.
What about the defensive values of the mounted infantry units? Has it been discussed yet?

For the 88's, I've found they are great for siege weapons. You slowly move them up to fortifications and after a few rounds of level bomber or artillery suppression you move the AT 88 against the fort and it is usually destroyed immediately. Or use them at river choking points against attacking tanks, or recon units while you have artillery backup.
As for the tanks, the best thing to do before attacking is always check the initiative of your enemy against your units, taking into account your units experience level. I've found that its almost suicide to send even the best tanks out front with a low experience level, even against infantry.

On the subject of 88's, how do you switch them from AA to AT mode?
