game won't allow me to send to opponent

The following game is stuck in my inbox and does not respond to the end turn button or the return key when I open it.

I have been able to play other turns but that one is locked

Can you help?

Does the game say that the turn has finished replaying (the % meter at the top)? It might be that they wandered off during their turn and it will then take a long time to replay. It might be you just need to give it a few minutes to play out.

This is well after the replay. I usually save after the replay and then reload and start moving units. (I've lost moves to an exception that drops me out of BA and I don't like to re-watch the replay) I saved the game several minutes before and moved. I cancelled and restarted and tried again. Still didn't upload and send to my opponent but will let me save again after moving a unit.

I checked the firewall settings and BA is allowed access. I assume there is little difference between save for later and send to opponent for the firewall.

I now have a second game in this state (quick battle v87 with random27).

That is very very odd. I've never come across anything like it before. So you can upload fine to save an ongoing turn, but the end turn button doesn't function at all? You are correct that technically they are pretty much identical, so it doesn't seem like a firewall issue.

Does anything at all pop up when you hit the end turn button?

Both of his scenario's are my creations so I don't know if that could be the problem.

I'm wondering if saving the turn, then restarting it is part of a "cheat" check on your server?

Are these the only scenario's (mine) that are causing this problem?
The beta (random87) is old and could contain bugs.

I have one update to my quick battles (v112) that I can upload but I don't know if the changes would fix Rick's problem (if my scenario is the problem that is).

The arrow flashes as I hit save and the goes back to the normal color. No comments dialog/no confirmation request.

I save and return a lot. I get interrupted at home a lot and don't like to keep a game open. Never had any problem before. Now that I think of it both of the games had the unhandled exception failure that kills BA. When I reload them, I've lost what ever move I made since my last save but still am able to continue. I've had it with other scenarios so I've started saving and reloading more often to protect my moves. The other scenarios still let me continue after the unhandled exception. This has been an annoyance with BA for a while, I assumed it was because my laptop is over 6 years old (lost the disk drive in 2007 and had to replace it) and still runs Windows XP. I've been playing most merr's random battles (love them) so I don't know if it happens on official scenarios.

I assume the save file is just map, units, positions/dead, and a log of movement, not any form of memory dump from the program so I assumed it would not be a problem especially since I can save these turns.

If you can't force them closed, or can't open them yourself to debug the problem (I assume you have a debug version that you can use), let me know and I'll try to surrender.

I just updated both the Solo and MP versions of my QuickBattles (v1.12) ... But I doubt they will help (I couldn't duplicate the error with the old version or the new one).

What you can do is play an official MP scenario and see if the same error occurs.

Also, there is an error log that generates after you get the unhandled exception error.
After you get the error, Look in your folder ... \Documents\My Games\BBCBA.
You'll see the file ERROR.TXT ... Open this and copy/paste it and post it here.
This will help Pip see what's wrong.

What he said :). I don't know of any crash bugs currently in the game, so it might be something from the scenarios (they push the scripting pretty hard!) or something machine specific. The error log will definitely help.

BTW, for Merr. I've been running your random MP games pretty steadily for two months now with at least a dozen medium and large played. I have very few allied wins. Most of the time the axis ends up with at least two panthers surviving and ruling the roost. I would recommend a lower chance of getting panthers and guaranteed allied heavy art (25 lbrs or Priests) to even up the medium and large games. Too soon for conclusions on the small but I feel it favors the axis slightly.

Yeah ... The Panthers are deadly when under the control of the human.

In v1.12, I added the Hetzer and it replaces the Panther and StugG on some force rolls. Also, I added the "Point Balance" in the UI to give an idea how balanced the scenario is points-wise (used just for reference at the moment). I'm looking at reinforcements as another way of balance ... Once either sides force point's reaches a certain level they will get a platoon of basic tanks (Shermans or PzIvg).

The Allied player really needs a 3:1 tank advantage over the Panther. I don't want to roll a 3:1 when the scenario begins because part of the fun is dealing with situations that aren't balanced. So, depending on how good either player is at using their units, I can add reinforcements (peicemeal) during the scenario.

I like your idea of providing more support for the Allied player in the form of artillery (on or off board). I found that onboard artillery would help (Priest) to deal with the Panthers ... Break their morale and go in for the Coup-de-grace!

Please post future ideas on balance (or whatever) in the QuickBattle thread ... all comments appreciated!

Another exception - I had played one side of a pair of quick battle large 40x40 BR_GE with khill9702 then I opened the other half, watched the replay, saved, and next thing that happened after the save follows. I moved no unit and had no air / art strikes.

--Only have two non-merr scenarios going, I had gotten used to the crashes so I don't remember.

--Only the BA app crashes not the full computer, haven't had this problem with others, but I've been pretty intense on BA for a while, left Heroes V, Shadow Magic, Hexwar for it, no problem with occasional Field of Glory, or MTG on Steam , or firefox and excel. Will keep the awareness level up. I'll elevate the laptop so it cools better. :-)

Still no explanation for why I can't send games to opponent. What is there in the save file that could be missing? Previous chat? Where is that stored when the game is started? Could I be a victim of a crash after which I switched scenarios I was playing and some hidden file was wrong for the new scenario?

The game files are self contained, so I don't think it can be related to a crash messing something up. The two logs you post show crashes in entirely different areas. :(

I will try and dig down some more, but it's all very odd. There seems to be a number of seemingly unrelated issues all of which haven't really been seen before as far as I can tell.

Could you try grabbing and running a RAM checker? Usually this is not something I would think about, but with widespread random crashing after playing for some time it might be worth checking.

I just surrendered the games. I suspect it has something to do with my hardware - it's old (but not as old as me!). I'll continue to play with saves so I don't lose turns. I do occasionally lose the use of the 1 (field of fire) and m (map) keys. I've also lost the tab and had the select unit mouse function bring up the info panel.

I've always assumed that I hit the key while something else is happening and the interrupt was lost and never reset. I usually just escape and reload the SW. This seems to reset the keys. Sometimes I lose the escape key, too, and cntrl-alt-delete my way out.

If clicking on a unit is bringing up the info panel, it probably means the CTRL key thinks it is stuck down. Could be a laptop key-sharing issue if there is anything that you do in that way? I know sometimes the ALT/ALT+GRA keys trigger CTRL downs on some laptops.

I'm still getting both problems. The occasional failures and "stuck" control key. I'm now getting the multiple downloads messages when I recover. I've decided the terminations are my laptop overheating. It seems to happen after it's been on for a while. I try to keep it elevated for better airflow but it's on old guy.

The "stuck" control key is more annoying. It's impossible to play while stuck. I don't do any key sharing that I know of. I've tried to save and reload but that doesn't fix it. When I use Ctrl-Alt-Ddel to switch to another task (like word or excel) there is no problem with the keyboard. (I can use keys with a ctrl option normally). When I switch back, the control key is still stuck. I usually just kill the program and reload because I've had the control key stuck twice in a row after I quit normally and it takes longer to save and logout.

Try adding the FPSLIMIT to the user.txt file to reduce the framerate. If you set it to

FPSLIMIT 60

for example, it will reduce the rendering speed to 30fps (rather than the usual limit of ~100). You can tinker with the value as needed. And it might help with the overheating.

The stuck keys is very very strange. My only guess is some laptop oddness with the keyboard. I know some ALT keys can be set up such that they send out CTRL messages too, but hitting CTRL should fix it. That it doesn't is bizarre.

I will take another look at the logic, but it is (as you might expect) very simple indeed. Key arrives, flag set, that's it really.

You can now save and exit without the keys, which should help a little, but I'm sorry your experience is still not fixed :(.

Still having the display lock up problems with occasional loss of internet (and server outages) so I'm now getting threatening email ("or you may find you are unable to continue to use the PBEM++ server system.") from slitherine. I'd gotten used to the problem and decided to live with it but now it seems I will be kicked off if it continues. I am "contact(ing) technical support" to say I don't know what to do. Will try the frame rate but that won't help server and wifi outages which I don't see how you can fix.
