Of any aspect of wargaming, what's the worst to you?

Post by MrsWargamer »

I have been wargaming since Tactics II was new. So I have been wargaming a great long time.

Over the years, I have seen some great wargames, but, I have also seen the ultimate dreadful of wargaming too.

It's not all golden eh.

Everyone has something they dislike, I am no different.

Of any aspect of wargaming, I think the one aspect I wish had never been thought up is the computer AI opponent.

Yes, we understand, some of you are combinations of unsociable, unmotivated and living in locations that are undesirable where playing another actual human is concerned. Some simply refuse to get off their butt and find someone to play. Some simply live in a location that either is remote and thus no face to face, or remote and thus no decent internet. It doesn't change the fact that when it comes to the AIs which we get in a snit about if they are omitted, they are all retarded adversaries.

I HAVE the games people, I have sooooo many wargames, that I have too many wargames to spend a lot of time playing most of them.
It's not commentary from someone that hasn't seen the gamed game.

AIs in wargames suck. Thus, they tend to be a waste of programming effort, thus they add time to the time required to make the program, and they inflate the price, all so they can offer us reasons to say the game sucks, when the truth is we knew in advance they would suck. Yet we get in a snit if it isn't there because we lack the needed drive to find a human opponent.

The best computer wargaming I have ever experienced, was Battle Academy vs a person. My win loss rate was me winning less than half the time, and it was incredible. I loved it. Ok I'd rather win I admit. But winning because I beat a computer AI? Nope there is no thrill in that let me tell you. It's easier to make a case that masturbation is an acceptable substitute for a sex life, than saying playing the AI in a wargame is ok.

I simply wish wargaming had never gone down the path of making the AI assumed to be an ordinary alternative.
I wish it had always been assumed computer wargames were just a means to an end to put to humans vs each other via a computer and able to eliminate the need for being in the same room at the same time.

I wish I had never really started computer wargames to some extent. It would likely have removed several years of grief from my life.
It took too long to obtain Battle Academy. The hobby went too long without the decent opponent finder that Slitherine has created.

To be honest, I'd LOVE for someone to just buy 80% of my computer wargames off of me even if the best offer was no better than 40% of original price. I have too many, and even at that level of return, I could by a lot of models I likely would enjoy more.

I don't expect many to share my views on the AI in gaming.
I expect a lot of people to be quite enthusiastic in defending games having AIs.
I still consider the AI to be the dumbest thing ever done to wargaming.
