getting some use out of my Early Crusader knights

Post by richnz »

So I picked up some Legio Heroica Early Crusaders. Stunning figures, but is there a list that is even halfway decent that makes use of them? Or am I consigned to running the full Early Crusader list and getting hammered every time?

Any suggestions?

Crusaders crusaders crusaders

Post by eldiablito »

Hello,

I just looked at the models and there were some military order knights. That means you are not dealing with 1st crusade, but after the creation of the Christian kingdom in Jerusalem. IOW, the army list for those models is the Later Crusader army list. Although, you are probably looking at pre-1150.

Now that said, Richard the Lionheart wore similar armor (if you believe the FOG army book images). So, you might be able to get away with 1151 and STILL field heavily armored knights. I know if I was playing against you, I wouldn't care one way or the other (just tell me your army list and date BEFORE playing and then tell me what the models represent as you deploy them).

Yep I have looked at the Italo-Normans too.

Next question- can armoured knights work?

Um. Well maybe better in 2.0

They get shot up pretty good.
They get POA'd by Heavy Armoured knights.

But after that they are solid.

I think the iberian armies have some real appeal, but mostly period competitions of historical stuff.

Most definitely. They are even against Heavily Armoured Knights and up against Cataphracts. So, if they 'do well' against them in the impact phase they are in with a good chance.

In the 'in period' fight they are going to go up against armoured cavalry etc, which are going to be even after impact, but I've put my cats up against heavily armoured knights often enough (pretty much the same fight as armoured knights vs armoured cav) and it's not a pretty fight.

I really like the idea of the Heavily Armoured with Armoured Knights in support option I get with my Post Viking Medieval Scandinavians, but I get no medium foot with that option, so usually go later when I can't get Armoured knights.

Armoured knights have their place. They aren't as good as Heavily Armoured Knights, but if you fight your battle differently then there is nothing wrong with them. I think in V2 they will be the knight troop type of choice.
