tank comparisons

Post by Kriegsheld »

I am having a great time taking the longest possible campaign route to Bagration so my units have as much experience as I can get them. I'll be there soon and need to think about how I use my prestige. I will be able to either overstrengthen some tanks or upgrade them in Bagration, but I won't be able to do both for all of them. Can someone tell me which is better, a 14 strength 400 exp PZIVH or a 10 strength 400 exp Tiger I? I think it's probably the Tiger I, but I'm not sure.

I set up a test: the two tanks you give stats for against a zero experience IS-II.

Pz IVH: -4 -2
Tiger: -1 -2

Tiger wins but it's only one test.

For a start look at the parameters Ini SA HA GD:

PZIVH: 9 / 8 / 13 / 14
Tiger I: 11 / 9 / 17 / 23

Bonus experience, as I understand it, gives +4 to each of these parameters. Total:

PZIVH: 13 / 12 / 17 / 18
Tiger I: 15 / 13 / 21 / 27

But then I have a problem ... Since I do not know a formula for the loss. But be that as it may, I doubt that 14 Pz4H win the battle against 10 Tigers. Their performance will fall faster than the tiger with each turn. Although it is worth noting that 14 Pz4H may be more effective against soft targets.

PS: Yes! Other things being equal, due to the benefits of the initiative, first hit 8 tigers (80%), surely destroy those same four Pz4H and only then will receive a response. So the performance is better tigers, imho.

The way this game is built, the best choice is ALWAYS to have the biggest tanks. (If you can get Tiger IIs or IS-2s you arguably don't need city-busting infantry at all!)

Regarding experience I find the implementation lacking. Those gold stars cost very much to maintain, too much when you consider how easily/quickly you regain up to three star rating through regular combat. Since you can expect most units to gain a full star for each mission, it is seldom worthwhile to pay prestige for elite replacements. Especially combined with the inaccurate combat predictor/swingy combats that mean sooner or later you will lose the XP anyway. The end result is that you will go through the campaign with units osccilating between zero and two stars at no cost. Trying to maintain a three star rating (or heaven forbid actually reaching five stars) is prohibitively expensive and not recommended. A bit of a shame, and something I'm hoping will get tweaked.
