I moved North toward the VP squares on a broad front, concentrating wherever needed to deal with trouble spots. By late game events had evolved into a major fight for the fortified position just west of the highway overpass. Hunkered down there were four German squads: one heavy and one light machine gun, one AT unit, and a regular infantry. Needless to say it was a tough nut to crack, taking all my combined arms skills developed thus far in the game. The key to it for me was to move up a large force from the east to the back door in conjunction with another force (including Bren guns, the mortar squad, and the two machine gun jeeps) at the front door to the south. I would also mention that the flamethrower, two jeeps, and mortar are worth their weight in gold in this mission, so use them with care.
It came as no surprise that the Germans made a late-game effort to recapture a few of the VP squares, causing some tense moments. The game ended with my paras fighting off German infantry in the mostly open ground at the one VP square just west of the fortified position. At the end it was another very satisfying win, as I fulfilled three of the four victory conditions. I must admit though that my casualties were heavy. That German fixed machine gun at the fortified position, especially, was the grim reaper.
Anyway, three cool and fun missions thus far. As we say in the States, you guys are batting a thousand. Market Garden is IMHO shaping up to be the best of the five campaigns.
Great job guys, keep them coming. Up next, 30 Corps Part Two.
