Saving a game- mid game

Just trying Market Garden. How do you save the game mid-game. It seems to just default to quitting the battle. The save game file is there in the Documents/My docs etc folder but is unaccessible.

Press esc and type a name for the save in the box.
You can call me junk - and type that with one hand.
